Tomorrow I set off for Toronto for my best friend's wedding and a holiday with her. A couple of weeks after that I'm going to Massachusetts for a few days, staying in Boston. This is my first time on the other side of the pond. Is there anything particular I should see in these places? Any nice churches, museums, beautiful parks, Phatmassers (beauty not required), etc.? My time in Toronto will be pretty full, but the friend I'm staying with in Boston will be at work during the day, so I will be out exploring on my own. :)

I like the museum of science more than the aquarium. I feel like a kid in there :) I've also heard really great things about the Harvard museum of natural history but haven't been. There's also a medical history museum near Mass General Hospital, it's small but it's free. I love free things.

I don't know much about churches in Boston. There's a small chapel in the Prudential Center that I've been to a handful of times. If you find yourself in that area you could pop in to pray (I think they have adoration and confessions quite frequently).

Have fun during your adventures!

I just spent a couple days in Boston! Go to the New England Aquarium. It's beautiful. You'll be right near the harbor, too, so you can go see some of that. There are some boat tours, of course, and I imagine they're worth it. :) Definitely grab a ticket for one of the buses that you can get on and off of all day long. Lots of history and you don't have to navigate the tube!

I recommend the Madonna Queen National Shrine in East Boston. It's a huge 35 ft. statue of Mary Queen of the Universe on top of a hill overlooking the airport. There's a nice church underneath too, but I think the hours are restricted because it's run by priests of Don Orione (a great saint who was a student of Don Bosco).

Parks...of course there's Boston Common downtown. The Boston Public Library in Copley Square is nice architecturally, and Copley Square in general is a nice place to visit. There's also a famous church across the street (Unitarian I believe) that has nice architecture.

If you're interested in history, and the weather isn't too brutal, don't miss the Freedom Trail.  It can be walked - about two miles - or there are bus tours where you can get off at whatever place you want, stay as long as you please, then catch the next shuttle to the next interesting stop.

Besides that, you could always take the Red Line subway-surface across the river to Somerville.  Our sisters would be glad to see you.  The Harvard Museums aren't far from there, and they are fabulous.  Walking around Harvard Square is a "trip" in itself .  Have a good time !

I have arrived in Canada, mostly. (I say 'mostly' because it feels as though my cortex, my frontal lobes, and several other key parts are still bobbing over the mid-Atlantic somewhere.) It was a horribly long flight with many delays. I began it by thinking brightly, "I can offer this up!" and ended it with, "Never - again - so - long- unless - can afford - business class - zzzzzz."

This is the wedding of a childhood best friend and her brother (to different people, obviously, they're not getting married to each other). These are traditional Pakistani weddings so it will mean about four or five parties each. The celebrations begin tomorrow. Hopefully by then I will have been able to reconstitute myself and I will no longer feel quite so much as though I have been run over by a tank.

I told my friend that in our free time I want bears and maple syrup. I ask for nothing more from Canada. Today she took me to eat maple syrup pancakes but she is being reticent on the bears. "They're not wandering the streets of Toronto, you know." I did not come all this way to not see bears. I am going to feel short-changed if I go home without any.

Now to find somewhere for Mass tomorrow. :)

Nihil Obstat

Toronto must have a zoo with bears. Make an afternoon of it. Your other options are somewhat more likely to end in aerosolized capsaicin and much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Not necessarily your own teeth.

Mass - the Oratory on...I want to say King West, way on out. One tram ride from downtown.
