Dreams & Visions

Just wanted to add this without making it an issue I hope.  A mentally ill person could have genuine mystical type of experiences and phenomena.  Such genuine phenomena is an action of God.    However, subjecting same to either health professionals of some kind and/or a priest or SD, probably the wisest and common sense course of action in all prudence for both would be to refute them as genuine and due to the presence of mental illness.  Overriding that is always that no one at all can undermine God's Purposes and a priest or sound spiritual director deciding experiences are not genuine for whatever sound reason or reasons, in humility and Joy knows and appreciates this fact I would hope.

MLF, I think you might have got me mixed up with superblue. :) I have a priest and religious spiritual director who is very traditional, a man of prayer and faithful to the Magisterium -  and have always had spiritual direction since my journey with private vows began over 35 years ago now.

I was responding to Super Blue in my post :) I only mentioned my priest in case someone is looking for an SD and doesn't know where to even begin... Of course good SDs can be found in various places but FSSP is one such place that I came across :)

Got it now!  Thank you for the correction............misread your post.  Can I claim old eyes can be tired eyes? LOL

are there any books out on the market, written by clergy, that helps the faithful to figure out via discerning / prayer or just a list of what ever to figure out if such dreams / visions / apparitions etc are from God ?

Or is the only answer we are ever going to get is go find a spiritual director and or priest to talk to  and see a psychologist . ?

I ask this because if one is not mentally ill, one might think they are if having such things happen, at least at first i would think, then if one is up to date on history, the Church and any priest just doesn't accept such things from a lay person or anyone as the truth right off the bat and rightly so, but it can also end up in disbelief altogether by the church which has happened to some saints. An with that in mind, might not be too inclined to be eager to bring that up.

An example would be with those who report UFO sightings, ( and i am only comparing the revealing of information ) those who report such things, especially those who come from credited fields are very hesitant to mention anything, and in the military such reports are always frowned upon....

Healthy Skepticism is fine, but it would be nice to have like a little book ( and don't even think about saying the bible ) that says okay if x,y,and z happens then you might qualify as at least not being crazy.

Would like to make a quick comment and without I hope making it an issue in this thread.

A mentally ill person could conceivably have genuine mystical type of experiences - such genuine experiences come from God.  However, if he or she subjected them to a mental health professional of some kind or a priest or spiritual director, then these in wisdom and prudence, sound common sense, would reject that they were genuine due to the presence of mental illness.  There would have to be outstanding reasons for them not to do so.

God is the author of genuine mystical type of phenomena.  A sound spiritual director or priest knows this and would in humility and Joy acknowledge it to themselves knowing that nothing can thwart God's Purposes.

Thanks for the responses! I wish I could've replied sooner, but I had terrible connectivity where I was last night.

I know I was vague, but I wasn't trying to suggest I had received some kind of revelation or that I was concerned about demonic wiles. But I am very curious as to if a dream could be considered a vision if it's of God or godly things. You know, you dream of God and wake and wonder if it could only have been a dream or if you can also consider it "real". I pretty much figure everything out on my own but I don't know what St. Ignatius' discernment of spirits are. I don't have a spiritual director, tried a couple times but...eh. I'm actually really concerned that when I take my vocation to my Bishop he'll try to make me get a SD, I don't think I want one. Anyways...
