sr.christinaosf
I wondered if anyone here has had exerience with spot removal and might be able to help me. We had old whine stains on our altar cloths. I read that a solution of 2-1 peroxide and Dawn dish soap could be used for removing such spots. I did this and let it set several hours before trying to rinse it out. Then I let it dry hanging by a fan. Now, it seems I did not rinse them well enough because there is a water/soap spot. I am reluctant to put them in the washer or dryer because there is decoration on the altar clothes that I do not think would do well in a machine. I may have to have them sent out to drycleaners but before that, would anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
Credo in Deum
Here is what I could find regarding guidelines and tips for laundering. http://mmredeemer.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/linenhandbook.pdf I hope this helps in some way. sr.christinaosf
These are altar clothes under the top cloth - they do not need special purification as they were never in contact with any of the vessels for Mass. Whine was spilled around offertory time. It had seeped through the top cloth.
Credo in Deum
Good to know. Maybe this advice might help. I found it as comment by a priest on Fr. Z's blog "Fr. Blake – for the nice glazed starch look…you have to use the real starch, cook it, soak your linens in it, hang them up to dry and then iron them..I learned this in the seminary when I was a studentin the seminary in Polan. I was on vacation and asked the Sister’s to show me how to wash and iron the altar linens. They said that this was the first time a seminarian aske to help and learn how to take care of the altar linens. Also, if you use red wine and there are red stains on linens, soak them in soda water….yes, the soda water for a drink…it takes the stains out. Bleach will just break down the material…Good Luck!Fr. Darrell" http://wdtprs.com/blog/2008/08/review-handbook-for-laundering-liturgical-linens/ I don't know if this is what you're looking for. Unfortunately I'm not wise in the ways of spot removal. It looks like only the advice of soaking in soda water would be the helpful part of Fr comment. Edit: another stain remover that I've used in the past which does not have bleach in it is OxiClean. sr.christinaosf
Not exactly what I'm dealing with. Thanks anyway.
CatherineM
You could try some whitening toothpaste. I've used that in the past to clean wine stains. As to starch, I once used a whole block on the back of an alb. I got into so much trouble when it made a loud cracking noise when he sat down during mass. sr.christinaosf
Unfortunately, this is a green altar cloth (used for ordinary time) and toothpaste would make matters worse.
CatherineM
You could just re-dye the whole thing a slightly darker shade of green.

sr.christinaosf
Really? Goes that work on heavy colored material?
Makarioi
Can you asked the dry cleaners? They may offer suggestions but they may want you to bring it in though. Worth a shot.
