Braggy Moment and I'm Stoked

So I'm going to Manhattan for five days and I'll have each day to myself (I'll in in a hotel by times square and I'm being handed spending cash, he he he). Yes, this is unusual for my lifestyle but I'm just grateful for the opportunity. I'm starting to get really stoked for this trip, and I'm planning each day with a few goals, but I have a few questions for anyone familiar with the area.

First of all, I plan to go to daily mass each day and I thought Holy Innocents would be good for the Latin mass, but I'm confused? They don't have the latin mass in the mornings, only in the evenings? Do they share the church building or something? In my diocese, the FSSP have their own parish and they do their own thing there. I'm confused as to how they wouldn't have their own parish, so if someone could enlighten me that'd be great, I really want to go to a morning Latin mass. The evening time kind of throws off my day. :( (plus I'm unsure about walking around new york after seven...) Anyone know any good morning mass times in the area? Doesn't HAVE to be latin mass, but since I'm treating myself I would prefer  something really nice, reverent... Would it be possible to do to daily mass at a parish or place served by the Franciscans of the Renewal?

Secondly... food suggestions!!! I want to hit up a couple of the BEST places for food. One of them has to be pizza. I'm currently going through blogs and articles about the best places to eat and so on, but any personal suggestions would be great!

How late do you think it'd be OK to stay out? Seven? eight? I'm familiar enough with Manhattan, I've traveled and spent time there (but always with another adult, first time on my own) and I'm pretty (ok, make that very) self-confident. I handle a lot of weirdos, harassment, and homeless people on the job so I'm NOT worried about dealing with a couple rough people here and there. (I can walk like a New Yorker lol. Except I smile a lot and look happy to myself... But I don't really make eye contact. and if I do I can quickly switch into Not A Nice Woman mode.) But, I will be a young woman walking around New York and using the subway unaccompanied. Any suggestions or tips?

The city is always overflowing with people late into the night, especially where you'll be staying. So I wouldn't have any concerns about harassment.

That's where the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal have Catholic Underground. One of the most beautiful churches I've ever been in.

The CFRs do not serve that parish (to my knowledge). If you want to celebrate mass with the boys in the beards you'll have to head to the Bronx.

Oh yeah, you're right. I've also heard Times Square is more "updated" for the tourists so Hell's kitchen and places like that aren't as rough as they used to be.

:shocking:That looks AMAZING. I'm going.

I will definitely see a mass there.  Beautiful. My dad (whom I'm sharing a hotel room with but during the day he'll be gone on business) will probably put his foot down about traveling into the Bronx, but I'll do some internet research and see if I can figure out something.

I think @Ancilla Domini is familiar with Holy Innocents. She might be able to tell you some more about the Mass schedule there.

I wish I could give some suggestions, but I haven't spent much time in the city, even though I'm from NY state lol. Anyway, enjoy your time in Manhattan! :)

Holy Innocents only has a daily Latin Mass in the Evenings - I think it's about six or seven. I don't believe there's another church that has a daily Latin Mass. There are quite a few around the city that have daily NO's, though. They're pretty much scattered around the city. I can't remember all the names at the moment, though. I know St. Francis (I think it's on 31st and 6th) has as daily mass. ( Weekday Masses 7:00, 7:45, 8:30, 11:30 AM and 12:15, 1:15, 4:30, 5:30 PM Saturday Morning Masses 8:00, 11:00 AM) I don't really frequent the Times Square area, though, so I'm not sure about daily-mass times there.

The only Franciscans of the Renewal I know of in the city are all in the Bronx, but I could be wrong. I only just started to be involved with the sisters about a year and a half ago, so I'm still not sure where all their communities are.

For Sundays, Holy Innocents' Traditional Latin Mass is at 10:30 AM and St. Agnes' at 11:00 AM.

Bleecker Street Pizza, 7th ave and Bleecker. That's quite good. I don't really eat pizza all that much, so I don't have all too many recommendations. But Bleecker Street Pizza is good.

Do you like Indian Food? There's a fantastic Indian restaurant down in the West Village called Ghandi Café. There are actually quite a lot of great restaurants down in the West Village - you should go there. Also, it defies the grid. It's a beautiful thing. xD

I've lived in Manhattan my entire life, and I've never had so much as a dangerous encounter. I don't stay out too late when I'm by myself (I'm a teenager, a girl, and not too tough-looking, either), but my mom and I often are out later, since I have music until 10:00 on Fridays. Friday nights are the worst I've seen - lots of people celebrating the weekend by getting drunk. But like I said, I've never had a problem. The city really isn't as dangerous as rumor has it.

I'm homeschooled and have a lot of classes to go to at various places in the city, so I use the subway by myself a LOT. Never really had a problem there either.

Not sure if that helps or not - I'm kinda writing in a rush, cause I have to go somewhere. If you need anything else, though, I can try to help. Have fun! And don't spend too much time in Times Square. It's hellish. Like, really. Hellish.

That was helpful AD, I feel more comfortable about traveling around now.

This place was amazing. STEAK

Ah, another amazing place! I'm so hungry. ok I have enough food recommendations! I now have seven places and foods I need to fit into the trip. Keeping the communion fast for daily mass is gonna be a toughie...

Unfortunately it now looks like I might not be going. I didn't know this, but due to people's summer schedule my manager scheduled everyone all the way into August. Usually you can just ask the Monday before for the days you need off, but I'm already supposed to work for the days I'm taking the trip. I asked a couple people to take it but was turned down. I haven't completely lost hope because there are a few other people I can ask, but if they say no, that's it. Then I asked for days off for another trip I've already planned in August, and again, I was already put down. I just... it upset me so much (I was sobbing when I got home) I had to take a look at why.

I don't like to get personal (my dad doesn't even know how much this touches me) but I'm posting because if you could say a prayer or something for the situation (both this trip and the one in August) to resolve, I will be very, very grateful. (Going to the prayer board seems a little overkill).

yes Yes YES!

Ok, first of all whoever prayed when I posted that, thank you. About an hour after I posted, I just felt a peace about the whole thing come over me, and a lot of my anxiety went away. It made for a nice night. When I first posted, I had written a long paragraph vent about how I felt and what I was dealing with and why I was justified to feel that way (I didn't state it that way outright but that's why I was writing) but in the end I deleted it. This is phatmass, not my diary. How I feel about it it legitimate just because I feel that way.

Anyways, I managed to get one person to help me out when I used a little green motivation, but that still wasn't enough. Then I get this text from my manager saying that she doesn't need to to come in because something came up. This has literally NEVER happened before. I'M GOING TO MANHATTAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've lived in Manhattan for years, and I'm in my 60's and I have no fear of walking at night or taking the subway.  NY is fairly gentrified these days and you will see people up and about at all hours.

Yes, I asked my dad if I could go to the Bronx by myself and he just said, Sure! He told me as long as you look like you've done this a million times it won't be a problem. It's only if you walk around looking naive and OH! a black person! will you get in trouble.
