PM SYSTEM STILL NOT WORKING. HELLO? PLEASE?

I am encountering this problem as well. I attempted to send a test message to myself, and it said I was an "invalid recipient." Apparently, the system thinks I am a sickly person (i.e., an invalid) who is too infirm to read online messages. :P

Lol I haven't had a PM in a while either, so I tested the system by sending a message to myself, with the text "Hi, self." :|

What if I also told you it takes even less time to list that email address on your profile so others can contact you?  What if I told you that by doing this simple and easy step you would eliminate your PM woes forever?

I did send you a pm but you never replied.

Yep.  If I ran this site I would have removed the PM system long ago.  With the wide range of free email providers on the web it is not hard for people to go out and make their own email address for this site.  I made one with outlook and put it on my profile under the contacts section the last time PM went out.  It also makes more sense to just go and create your own email account since this will allow those who leave the site to still keep in contact with friends they've made on this site.  Add also that this site is free and dUSt isn't charging anyone for membership, which I've seen sites do for the privilege of having a PM system, we should just be happy to have what we do.  Last time dUSt posted the donations he's received, it shocked me.  Seriously I'm amazed this site is even still up.

My understanding is that the main purpose of having PMs is to increase traffic to a site, as well as to help build user loyalty. If I am notified that I have a PM, I come here to visit Phatmass, and then probably stay to read anything new that has been posted on the site. My understanding is that this is one of the main reason why sites such as Google, Yahoo, etc. offer unlimited email addresses.

A site like Phatmass needs a certain amount of traffic to remain a viable site that people want to visit often. If the number of new posts drops below a certain level, people won't visit as often, which then leads to fewer posts and so on and eventually the site "dies".

Personally, I find it easier to use the PM function for my Phatmass friends, especially since it means I don't have to leave Phatmass in order to receive PMs. AIso, don't necessarily want to give out my "primary" Web site address in my profile. I've tried having multiple email addresses, but personally found it more cumbersome to keep logging in and out of various email addresses than using the "private message" function on the various sites I belong to.

I feel very bad that dUSt does not receive enough donations to support Phatmass' costs, much less begin to cover his time. I do know that a lot of people on Phatmass are poor students who are trying to get by on low budgets. Not to mention that Phatmass wants as many Catholic Religious members as possible. Lately we have had more Catholic Religious post on Vocation Station, and it has been very helpful for discerners. I'm not going to try to "shame" anyone on this Phorum into giving because I don't know their personal situations. For example, I know that several discerners on VS are having to delay their entrance because of debt, and are saving every penny in order to enter Religious life.  Based on Phatmass posts versus other sites I've belonged to, Phatmass seems to have more members who are on very tight budgets, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt that the reason they aren't donating is financial, not because they don't want to give

One possibility is to offer "value-added" services. For example, one site I used to belong to offered "premium" memberships with significantly more space for PMs. (However, that site also had more traffic than Phatmass so having more space for PMs was a big deal.) But, perhaps there are other types of "value-added" services that could be offered. Unfortunately my mind is going blank right now with regard to additional services that would be valuable to Phatmass members.

So far, dUSt has kept Phatmass "ad-free," and kudos to dUSt for that. But, if dUSt were open to selected ads, that could be one solution. I don't like ads, but I could live with it. Since dUSt gives so much of his time, I think it's only fair that he is at least reimbursed for the "hard-dollar" costs of running this site.

As FP said, the problem with PMs is almost certainly some kind of technical issue with the site itself. We know that the site software supports PMs, since we had PMs until a few weeks ago. But, right now, I don't know anyone except Mediators of Meh who has PM capabilities. Phatmass posters use a wide variety of types of computers, programs, devices, etc. to access Phatmass. If the problem were a user problem, I'd expect that we'd find that some users were able to access the PM system and some were not.

Bottom line: I find that having PMs is much easier for me than using multiple email addresses. And, I suspect that having PM capability increases Phatmass traffic and loyalty although I can't prove it. (Plus, these may be long-term effects that wouldn't show up in user traffic numbers for the weeks we haven't had PM.). I hope PM capability is restored soon.
