The FSSP show the strength of the clean shaven. ;)

This is a serious question--Why DO the FSSP's want their priests to be clean shaven? I'm sure there is a good reason, but I can't think of one. Thanks!

I will ask on Thursday if you want a very official answer, but I think it is a cultural aesthetic choice on the part of the superiors. It is certainly true that the priest of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was almost always clean shaven. I would imagine it is a conscious choice to recall those men.

Thanks! I don't need you to go to the trouble of getting an official answer. I was simply curious. Since the FSSP's support Traditional Roman Catholicism, and since so many (most?) male Christian Saints, and most likely Jesus himself, had beards, it surprised me. As I said, I figured there was a good reason behind it, but didn't have a good guess as to what it might be.

Hopefully Nihil will get the official answer but I also believe that their priests serving in the missions are instructed not to shave because of the high risk of razor cuts getting infected with much lower access to treatment.

But it's not just them: the diocesan seminary in BC also bans facial hair for the seminarians (along with a strict dress code). It leads to a lot of priests showing up to their first ever assignment with a beard!

Conversely, my impression is that beards are more popular than average among younger traditionalist laymen.

My diocese formerly had an anti-beard law in place for its seminarians, but the new Bishop did away with it as soon as he came in last year. I'm pretty sure the neighboring dioceses also have said law in place except for one.

I actually wonder if this is regional - they're mostly clean shaven here.
