Jurassic World

Not A Mallard

Anybody else seen it yet? I haven't seen the other sequels recently enough to use as a point of comparison, but I think of Jurassic World as a big-budget B-movie homage to the much more subtle original, complete with cheesy characters and amesome dinosaur battles. The audience reaction on opening night was the best part: we laughed along with the goofiness and cheered during the climax like I hadn't heard the audience cheer since the Hulk threw down Loki in The Avengers. It's completely disposable, and I probably wouldn't watch it again whence it's out on DVD, but it's worth seeing once or twice on the big screen.

Not The Philosopher

I've definitely filed this one under, "make sure you watch with a friend."

This movie has second-highest opening weekend gross of all time? Didn't see that coming.

My main gripe is the lack of variety of dinosaurs.  All you really saw were raptors and the hybrid. There are only glimpses of others.

I wanted much more dino vs. dino scenes. I'd prefer to watch Dino King again before Jurassic World. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2248068/

I am also sick and tired of these movies having to have a evil bad guy. I don't mind a person worried about the money being made and/or lost. But why evil guy? Can't the movie survive with the dinosaurs being the bad villain?

Not to mention, really cliche, one-dimensional bad guys (and heroes). "Let's weaponize raptors!" I can picture the next one being called Jurassic War. (Or Call of Duty: Jurassic Warfare.)

Here's my favorite reviewer on the movie. I like his comment on how essentially all the people in the movie are basically cartoon versions of themselves:

I was wrong. It's officially the biggest opening weekend in history.

This is a sad day for mankind.

This is a sad day for mankind.

Until the next #1 opening weekend movie, Jurassic World will probably be remembered after ten years as Jurassic What? I wouldn't be surprised if Star Wars VII takes the reign.

Hopefully. I have my hope that JJ Abrams won't screw this up.

I was surprised at the intellectual heft of this movie. There's subversive subplots galore (e.g. : what happens, or rather what doesn't happen, between the two nerdy "tech-heads" in the control room), subtle treatment of emotionally resonant themes (e.g., the gradual, delicate revelation of the nature of the parents relationship), while the main focus throughout is one long, self-referencing meta-narrative around Hollywood sequel/blockbuster culture.

That plus lots of throw back homages to the 1993 original means I was super surprised and pleased. Audiences gave it a rare "A" cinemascore, which means it will have great word of mouth. No doubt Universal is breathing a sign of relief that this franchise still has legs.
