Julia123456789
Hi, Just wondering if someone would be willing to answer a few questions... How can Catholics connect with the spiritual? Is there a difference between spirituality and being religious? Are they important? Do people need either?Do secular types of spirituality practices mean as much as religious? I.e. Yoga (Secular) compared to taking the Eucharist (religious) Thank you very much

Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
i can rattle it off again easily. A mans heart is tested by the LORD! NOT ANOTHER MAN OR WOMAN! JESUS IZ LORD. Okay sister julia peace be with you and welcome to phatmass. It is quiet simple without Grace there is no Faith and works and works comes from Faith andFaith from Grace. Also Religion = Works in word and deed and Spirituality = Faith = prayer, meditation, studying the holy word and other spirituals etc. Also no works are truly Good without Grace and Faith and doomed to fail or at least only band aid a problem and not actually cure what usually needs a bandage, stitches and a splint. God bless you. Onward christian souls. Jesus Loves you. P.s. If your struggling with what is the truth perhaps start by trying to believe the number one promise in holy scripture and that is if you believe that Jesus was God, that you are a sinner and repent, and believe that he died for your sins and resurected on the third day, than you are going to heaven, 100% without a doubt, it is the only guarantee given to man and women. Without this belief than fear of death can creep in and will suffocate grace, faith and works, and at the least stifle it. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Also Julia i am no theologian and nor someone of any repute. I can only tell you what i have stated may not be 100% correct but i am pretty sure it is not far from the truth and have only learnt about the truth through prayer, meditation, studying holy scripture and other catholic spiritual works and fervent participation of the holy sacraments, alleluia(thanks be to God). And would never deliberately deceive anyone but that is my word in a world that has become very efficient liars. dUSt sorry for the 3 flood, i got agitated at my previous posts being deleted and my words are now mixed up to some degree. You may have posted in the other thread that was a duplicate of this one just as I was deleting it to keep the board clean instead of just merging the threads. Sorry about that. Ash Wednesday
How can Catholics connect with the spiritual? We are constantly connected with the spiritual, whether we are aware of it or not. "Pray without ceasing" Is there a difference between spirituality and being religious? I view "spirituality" as an umbrella term for that which concerns the spiritual world and spiritual matters. I view religious practice as being more specific and concrete. Are they important? Do people need either? Both important, and I think it goes beyond just a need, again it's part of who we are, whether we acknowledge it or not.Do secular types of spirituality practices mean as much as religious? I.e. Yoga (Secular) compared to taking the Eucharist (religious) I view secular usage of term of "spiritual" as often being a vague, noncommittal statement for those that want to avoid association with any specific religion. But some spiritual practices in themselves, like general prayer, are beneficial. Some are controversial and end up in a sketchy area, like "centering prayer" -- some are forbidden, like reiki. But I can't view any spiritual practice as equivalent as receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.

But I can't view any spiritual practice as equivalent as receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. The maranatha is the original centering prayer. To the holy roman catholic church it is known as ejaculatory prayer. Check it out. And as far as i'm aware is in no way controversial bearing in mind that Jesus says repetetive prayer will not get you into heaven, in truth no prayer can get you into heaven though of course we all still need to pray, only Jesus and Jesus alone can get us into heaven, Christs love/Grace. Thats my knowledge and understanding on the matter anyway, i begun my journey back into the church with centering prayer, i was administered to repeat an old testament verse over and over again for 1 minute, i remember the verse clearly, " The LORD is my rock and my redeemer." Ash Wednesday
Thanks Tab. The issue of centering prayer and the definition of it will vary -- and it's been discussed and debated a lot among Catholics. I think perhaps some of it depends on the method of prayer.

Egeria
Well, given the confusion, let me post this here as well. It's a talk by Sister Vassa Larin and addresses precisely the sort of questions you raise. Highly recommended. (Sister Vassa is an Orthodox monastic and liturgical scholar who studied under Father Robert Taft, SJ. She also hosts the more popular Coffee with Sister Vassa series).
