Praise for Pope Francis from the New York Times

Francis is doing a great job as our new Pontiff - can't go wrong with an engineer at the helm I always say!

I believe he is making himself truly an image of our Lord, and he holds to Church teachings - I have no doubt that Saint Peter himself would approve.

God bless our papa, keep him safe and healthy, and may he be with us for many many years to come!

I admire Pope Francis, but this article is a silly personification of this guy's worldview onto the Pope.

Alls I can say is there's no thing as an objective article, ever. I'm glad the writer appreciates Francisco even if he doesn't like Catholic doctrine or Papa Benny.

Lets take good compliments towards our holy father already...  how often does it come around?  Really?!  Come on!

The NY Times praises what they can use. If Pope Francis can assist in minimizing the opposition, they will hail him. If they can quote him on every anti-faith agenda, he is the man. So from same-sex unions (who am I to judge) to climate change, the Pope has given the impression that obedience isn't of the highest regard. Save the planet. Feed the poor. Don't get rich. Wash the feet of muslims and women. Hope & Change.

So since when is recognizing climate change anti-faith?  When is save the planet anti-faith?  Jesus was very clear about stewardship.  He was also very clear about feeding the poor, recognizing women, and acknowledging (and curing) lepers, then the most despised and feared,  like muslims today.

IMO the praise being given is because the writer believes that Francis displays a more humanist type of behavior rather than that of a man who practices religion.  What the writer misses out on is that it is Francis' Catholic Faith and the living of that Faith which makes him who he is.  Rather the writer focuses it on Francis and makes it look like fun loving Francis has infiltrated big mean Catholicism.

Again this is what I took from the article.

So God somehow wrote straight with crooked lines?  A staunch, liberal nincompoop does something other than smash the pope....and it elicits an 'ouch'?

I see your point and pretty much agree with everything your post above.  IMO, so what if the writer doesn't see him as a 'man who practices religion'?  He sees the Vicar of Christ as a human who he can identify with. (even if that identification is misconstrued)  It's a starting point.  It's hope.  Granted, thin hope.. but hope nonetheless.  Perhaps the part that the writer misses out on...the "it is Francis' Catholic Faith and the living of that Faith which makes him who he is" is a more learned "step".  But perhaps his mind is open, or more open to faith than he was before.

Expecting a NYT writer to grasp the totality of your post is akin to asking a t-baller to hit for the cycle....

I just find hope in these small... sometimes infinitesimally small steps... May they be used to His Glory.

Sorry for being a hippie.....
