From a movie standpoint, it was amazing. SOO funny.

From a theological standpoint, it was a mess. The reason for that is the guy's reason for making the movie was that his mind was in a theological mess and he used it to sort things out (he was Catholic).

I especially liked the part with 'the muse'

What are guys talking about? Dogma is onee of the most anti-Catholic movies Hollywood's ever made! I mean, an atheist getting the stigmata? What a bunch of hoopla! And as I remeber it didn't the preist eventually leave the Church or something? IT'S AWFUL EVERYONE!!!!

ahh kevin smith...

i guess if it doesn't make you think then its not worth making...?

or should hollywood just stop making films that have faith issues all together...?

hmm...
that would make me sad.

I haven't seen this movie, but from what I've heard, it's pretty anti-Catholic. Regardless of the fact that it's just a comedy, it still was pretty irreverent towards Catholicism. I can't be likin' that.

Sarah -- I have no problem with Hollywood making movies about faith, but I do have a problem when films about faith mock the faith they're trying to portray.

The thing is, though, that this movie isn't the least bit challenging or thought-provoking. I doubt those involved with the film would describe it as some kind of highbrow "think piece."

God bless,

Jennifer

?

high brow? i don't think i'd consider it 'high brow' either.
and i can't think of a 'high brow' film at the moment...too late i guess. :)

but dogma did make me think twice about some things.
whether it was kevin smith's intention to lead others to christ by making dogma - i have no idea, i'm not kevin smith (thank goodness.) ;) whether or not you think he had that intention is a different discussion entirely. i don't agree with everything he's made/said etc, but i do believe he exposed himself and his faith by making this film, which is hard for anyone to do.

also just a reminder for those who have seen it and for those who haven't - the following is ksmith's "disclaimer" that rolls at the beginning of the film. take what you want from it.

"Though it'll go without saying ten minutes or so into these preceedings,
View Askew would like to state that this film is from start to finish a
work of comedic fantasy, not to be taken seriously. To insist that any of
what follows is incendiary or inflammatory is to miss our intention and
pass judgement; and passing judgement is reserved for God and God alone
(this goes for you film critics too...just kidding).
So please before you think about hurting someone over this trifle of a
film, remember: even God has a sense of humor. Just look at the Platypus.
Thank you and enjoy the show.
P.S. We sincerely apologize to all Platypus enthusiasts out there who are
offended by that thoughtless comment about Platypi. We at View Askew
respect the noble Platypus, and it is not our intention to slight these
stupid creatures in any way.
Thank you again and enjoy the showAfter the end credits, Jay's line "So... does that mean Bethany's... part
black?" line is repeated."Dogma" is the culmination of lifetime's worth of disparate spiritual and
satirical influences, which owes a debt to sundry storytellers and
word-smiths these authors and instigators I humbly thank in no particular
order...
Saint Mathew Saint Mark Saint Luke
Saint John Sam Kinison George Carlin
Elaine Pagels John Milton Cervantes
Martin Scorsese Alan Moore Thomas Moore
Spike Lee Douglas Adams Robert Bolt
Quentin Tarantino Nikos Kazantzakis Dennis Arcand
Neil Gaiman Grant Morrison Matt Wagner

and Sister Theresa from 8th grade."

I wouldn't say that because the movie uses the catholic church for comedy it is anti-catholic....if this were its intention I do not feel it succeded...if I were to make an anti-catholic movie it would look nothing like Dogma!
