NadaTeTurbe
25 But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all that were before him. 26 For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities. Okay, in my french translation it's something like "Omri did what is evil in the eyes of the Lord". So... What does Omri did ? Does it mean that he did not respect commandment, or does it refer to a special sin ? I searched in a book about the Torah that I have, but found nothing. Catlick
Jerobeam (Jeroboam? Depends on your language, I guess) sinned against the Lord by reinstating the old polytheist cults. Omri apparently stimulated the worship of gods other than JHWH.
NadaTeTurbe
Okay. But in the little comment of my (catholic) Bible, they say "There is no doubt that Omri was a great king." How can you be a great king if you sin in the eye of God ? and why are they not telling more ? THis is frustrating for me, I love the book of Kings, but I wishe they say more about each king... Perhaps he was great in terms of his social and economic policies and his strong leadership in secular matters? I agree with you that it is odd for your commentary to call him "great" when he caused Israel to sin. I wish we could learn more about the kings, too. Sometimes they are discussed again in 1 and 2 Chronicles, though I don't think that is the case for Omri.
Nihil Obstat
Pretty much every great king sinned greatly at some point. Even David.
