The need for Patristics

The camel

Recommended Posts

I've met two former Protestant ministers who became Catholics after studying these writings. Neither had studied them before. They had gotten to a point in their careers that they had assistants so they had time for personal study time.

So if they want to study them, great. I'm not afraid of people reading the truth.

He (Golitzin) is a professor at Marquette, a Russian prince and an Orthodox bishop, which is a pretty fun combination, no?

That whole question of the influence of neo Platonic thought, especially in its more 'esoteric' forms, is very interesting, but somewhat outside my field.

Was a professor at Marquette, once he became bishop he left the position, I believe.

Is your original question about Average Joe Catholic, or Catholic theology/scholarship? Because if it's about the former, I would largely agree with Luigi. However, at my parish, I often hear excerpts from sermons of the Fathers. Of course, my home parish (when I'm not at school) has Dominican friars, and the priests at the parish I attend are of a similar caliber academically. So it also depends on your parish.

I have a book compiling all the early Church Fathers, their lives, the Councils (ecumenical and otherwise), all the heresies and short explanations of them, and all of the early Church Father's writings, and I read it quite regularly. I love patristics. They are the sledgehammer that give a definitive blow to any protestant's arguments.

Author and title?

The Fathers Know Best by Jimmy Akin. Best book on the patristics, hands-down. It puts all their writings in subjects for easy accessibility. Homosexuality, the Eucharist, the Mass, male-only priesthood, baptism, the Trinity, contraception, anything you can think of, really.

Nihil Obstat

How is the translation, Nihil Obstat? My biggest concern is that a work is properly translated.

I would not know enough to say with any certainty.
