Ash Wednesday
So here's an odd bit of news one doesn't hear every day: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who had once been a couple themselves, expressed a skepticism to creating families using in vitro fertilization, surrogate mothers and gay adoption. In an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama, the duo iterated that "there are things that should not be changed." In the interview, Dolce told the magazine "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented wombs." Gabbana added "the family is not a fad." The language he used was pretty insensitive (specifically "synthetic children") but their endorsement of the traditional family given that they are both gay and were once in a relationship themselves is intriguing. Dolce also refers to himself as a practicing Catholic (though that can mean anything these days) and they have recently included pregnant women, grandmothers and toddlers on their runways. Not surprisingly they are receiving a tremendous amount of backlash despite the backtracking that they "aren't judging anyone's decisions" I'd be interested to hear some thoughts on this. Is this a publicity stunt gone wrong in the name of "rebellious fashion" or an inkling of response to the Hound of Heaven after them? http://www.cbsnews.com/news/elton-john-others-criticize-dolce-gabbana-on-ivf-views/ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11474332/Elton-Johns-Dolce-and-Gabbana-boycott-backed-by-Martina-Navratilova-Courtney-Love-and-Ricky-Martin.html Edited March 16, 2015 by Ash Wednesday
Archaeology cat
I wonder how accurate that translation is. I mean, we've all seen bad translations from Italian news sources for Pope Francis. I was definitely surprised to see this statement from them, but it's a step, I think.
Luigi
Only they can tell us WHY they're doing it. And even they may not know (or we may not believe their explanations). But I do think it shows a good deal of courage on their parts to make these kinds of statements publicly. They had to know in advance how they would be received. Batten down the hatches! We might be in for an all-out, in-public, politically-correct, toeing-the-party-line battle!
dUSt
While some D&G ads are completely inappropriate, it is interesting how they also have ads such as these: Edited March 16, 2015 by dUSt
Nihil Obstat
I thought it was a fascinating story. I would very much like to know how things end up for them, although given how the news goes I will probably never hear any kind of follow up. It certainly takes courage to say what they said, not to mention the industry that they are in, and their own pasts.
Ash Wednesday
Yes, the photos and campaigns with the traditional families has been a recent development and trend from them in the last couple of years, apparently. Certainly their traditional Italian family backgrounds seem to have a pull and influence on them. Heaven forbid these guys have an opinion about themselves, lest it be one that many people in the modern west don't want to hear. Era Might
I've reached my breaking point with the whole world of marketing and advertising. Seriously, I think we've reached a point of no return, this world is done for. These bourgeois depictions of "family life" are worst of all. I can't take this ish anymore. While some D&G ads are completely inappropriate, it is interesting how they also have ads such as these:

Era Might
You expect anything other than bourgeois from D&G??? lol No, of course not, all advertising is bourgeois. But I find those particular ads more obscene than hardcore pornography, at least porn is refreshingly direct, they don't have to pretend to be respectable. Rowdy Roddy Piper agrees. Era Might
That is horrific and absurd. I completely agree. Pornography at least doesn't include children in its orgies. With D&G, we have an orgy of consumerism, two people who have bred a room full of future D&G consumers. It's not just horrific and absurd, but Kafkaesque. Era Might
You know what I meant. What you said, I'm guessing. And I agree. It's horrific and absurd, like Gregor Samsa waking up one day and finding himself to be a monstrous vermin. I would be rather be dead than identify with those ads, even if it makes me a giant bug.
