It is very unwise. Very, very unwise in a part of the world that is a timber box for sectarian strife, to organize resistance to ISIS around religious confession.

Completely agree.  The christian identity should be removed from the region all together.

That's not what she's saying. And I think she's right - ISIS wants nothing more than to incite an all our war against Christians and the West, they think it'll only rally more people to their cause because (among other things) they can say "oh look see we're right the Christians and the West really do hate Islam and want to kill us and everything!"

I sympathize with the idea of creating a Christian brigade, it can give people a nice feeling of hope and solidarity against a common enemy. But I don't think it's the most prudent decision.

You may be unaware of this, but as it stands there are very few people with a Christian identity in the region to begin with. If the battle is organized around religious confession, the Christians will lose.

That's why ISIS wants it to be organized around religious confession.

I'm not against self defense, but let's not forget the real power we have is joining our sacrifices to Christs!  Muslims think they win when they slaughter us, but the truth is they actually harm their own cause!  Muslim:  Do you believe in Christ?  Christian:  with all my heart! Muslim: if you convert to Islam you will live and if not you will die.  Christian: send me to my Lord and Saviour.  I will ask that my death be payment for your conversion.  I love you and I forgive you.  Muslim: *beheads Christian*. Years go by and the Muslim is now 90 and on his death bed.  Your sacrifice fresh in his mind since the day he martyred you.  With his last dying breath he repents for his sins with true contrition and receives baptism.  You welcome him in heaven.

It's a little funny to see people very removed from the situation argue, with much confidence, about what these poor souls choose to do in their home land.

That is interesting, because I am never on except for weekends. Trust me, I have no desire whatsoever to be on here more than is allowed. The only reason I'm responding to you is because I get email notifications that you've responded, and I have given myself no Lenten restriction on viewing email.

It sounded sarcastic and skeptical.

Well my apologies then for sounding like that to you. I can see how you would see it that way perhaps. I am not your conscience but I do see your name an awful lot on the who's logged in right now list and it made me wonder because I thought that the whole point was to try to take a break from phatmass? I have taken many breaks that lasted months so I know it is a good thing to do from time to time, but if it is a Lenten resolution then I think one would want to spend the time that they normally spend on phatmass in prayer or something. So perhaps it is just a strange glitch in the new system that has you logged in so much during the week. And even if you get email notifications, it does seem that instead of coming back to phatmass and replying right away, you could mortify yourself by waiting until Saturday night. But, as I said, it is your Lenten practice, not mine, and I guess you are free to do whatever you want with it. It is obviously a difficult practice for you - so that's a good thing, isn't it?! :) PAX

PS - or you could turn off email notifications to stop the temptation??

As to the topic of this thread, I find it incredibly strange that we now have 'militant Christians'. I know, I know, there were the Crusades etc, but it just seems such a contradiction to the teachings of Jesus that Christians should band together to fight and kill - even if those they are killing are doing evil things. But then, that's my take on it.

True, mea culpa.  I would probably be the first person to switch to a "let the bodies hit the floor" mode.  Sadly, I've never been good at following the gospel.  Please pray for me.

Yes, that's true, until we actually walk in their shoes, it is impossible for us to really know what we do if we were there. It's still sad though that violence seems to be the only recourse.

if you are from the West and feel "very removed" from the situation "over there," that is, imo, blameworthy.

Or maybe the fault lies in the fact that we do not have a draft, and that allows more people to feel "very removed."

Perhaps my memory is unusually long, but imo it has been 15 years since any American could reasonably claim to be "very removed" from what happens "over there."

It has nothing to do with feelings. I'm not there witnessing and/or living with the ear of people brutally murdering me and my family and friends so I'm not gonna say it's imprudent for them to fight back because I think they understand the intricacies in the region from, you know, living there their whole lives. Nor am I going to claim that it's the grand solution that will solve everything or tell people they should be martyrs.

I don't like sitting back in my chair and casting judgments on such people. I enjoy sitting back and casting judgment on fellow Americans on the internets.

You make me laugh because I, too, am always juding others on the Internet (it's so much easier than getting to know them, don't you think?) LOL

I'm sure there are better memes but this one made me laugh.

I think some of you are overthinking it.

ISIS appears to have one philosophy. convert or die. These Christian soldiers have found a  3rd option, fight back.

They shouldn't - ISIS has every right to form a nation and every right to establish laws in this nations according to their culture, customs and religious beliefs.  Christians have no right to impose their will upon ISIS.
