chrysostom
I want to wander this summer and I'm taking suggestions. I would like to visit some pilgrimage spots, perhaps take part in an organized pilgrimage. Any particularly lovely churches, monasteries, cemeteries, mountaintop crucifixes, etc.? Any particularly lovely communities you know of who would take in a solitary (male) traveler for a night or two (or seven)? Suggestions don't have to involve Catholic things though. Is there an out-of-the way corner of Europe you'd just love to go back to? A hidden lake/castle/teahouse/garden/bookstore? Or for anyone who's done something like this before, what are the best ways to travel inexpensively? I'm going to keep it to Western Europe, but you can throw it out there all the same. If for whatever reason you want to keep it private, shoot me an e-mail which you can find on my phatmass profile (minus the http:// of course) (:
AccountDeleted
Walk part of the Camino. you can do it through France or Spain or Italy or a combination of all. There a very cheap hostels along the way, and I even saw one guy just camp out in a sleeping bag along the way. There are some really nice churches along the way too. Ancilla Domini
Bavaria, Germany, is an amazing place for both churches and monasteries and the like as well as lovely little out-of-the-way places. I'd recommend going to the Basilica of Ottobeuren, which is one of the most impressive examples of Rococo churches I've ever seen. It rests on a small hill overlooking a beautiful little town. Of course, I don't know if you go for Rococo. Some people don't. If you do, though, I'd recommend going there. Vierzehnheiligen is also a fantastic church to visit. (Also in Bavaria.) I can't include a picture of the inside because pictures can't possibly capture it. I'm very partial to Bavaria, so I'll recommend some little towns to go to: Dinkelsbühl Rothenburg Ragensburg Bamberg Munich -- this is a larger city, with an old town and a new town. The market place is fantastic - a very unique experience. Another bonus is that most of the locals wear traditional dress, ie., lederhosen and dirndls. There are some fantastic places in Northern Italy, as well, but I need to go now, so I'll include those later, if wanted.
