MarysLittleFlower
I'm discerning my vocation and I live in Canada but I'm struggling to find many communities here. Obviously its up to God's Will (both location and community) but here's sort of what I'm looking for... I attend the Latin Mass and would love to visit communities with the Latin Mass. Not sure if there are any in Canada though? Im also drawn to the more traditional or conservative orders... Strongly contemplative (even if active too), habits, reverence for the Eucharist, etc... Orders like Carmrlites, Poor Clares or Passionists seem to fit this well but I'm open to any that is God's will if this is my vocation. I'm aware of the Sisters of Our Lady Immaculate and there are some Carmelite orders (never looked into them in detail though), but I can't seem to find many more traditional ones? The Queenship of Mary Sisters also seem wonderful and joyful and a couple other orders... But there really don't seem to be many! :( Any other Canadians here or anyone who knows? :)
vee
The Sisters of Life are in Canada and I think the Nashville Dominicans were working on starting something but Im not sure how its going. This page might help. http://www.deoestgloria.com/ca.o.master.html I am not sure of any communities with the Latin Mass either, I highly doubt there are. You are right there that when compared to the US we don't have the same variety of Communities to choose from. Religious life is really suffering here and many vocations find their place next door in the US. I pray that we may have a regrowth of vocations here that re evangelize the country! MarysLittleFlower
Yes I think that's a great thing to pray for! Many young women end up going to the US and its good there are more orders there but i wish there was more of a choice here too. A community with the Latin Mass would be great too. truthfinder
MarysLittleFlower, feel free to send me a PM about both orders in Canada as well as TLM communities in Canada (we can talk more locational specifics if you want). But in general, you're right, a whole lot less for us Canadians. The Soli sisters do seem to get the occasional EF mass (just look at the communities they have to give their retreats.) Also, there are apparently quite a few Canadians in the JMJ Carmels, so you never know... The Nashies have an apostolate in Vancouver, BC which is small and relatively new - you'd already have to be in the order to be assigned there and idk what the chances would be once you've done all the formation. There are Carmelites DCJ, Sisters of Our Lady of Matara, etc and several growing groups. There are Poor Clares in BC (as well as some in Quebec). There seems to be a slow desire to introduce more tradition into the cloistered convents, but progress is slow, measured, and sometimes caught up in conflicting visions of cloistered life today. Sr Mary Catharine OP
There is a new Dominican monastery in Vancouver. They may not "look" traditional but they live an authentic contemplative life and are quite "serious" about solitude and silence. They don't have a Latin liturgy but theirs is quite beautiful! Their monastery is still a work in progress as they are able to save money to do things. About 2 weeks ago the parents of one of the sisters was building them choir stalls! Before all the pews were made of trees from the property. Their tables and desks are as well. Actually, the stone and other building materials comes right from the property. Eventually, they hope to build a guest house which will have 2 entrances--one for the sisters side of the enclosure and one for the guests. There they will have the parlors, etc. Right now the parlor doesn't have material separation although the chapel and everything else does. It's in a temporary place. The monastery doesn't look like a traditional European style monastery but fits the area and it is very simple but also warm and inviting. The cells are awesome! They have BIG windows looking out to the mountains. Right now they have 3 in the novitiate. If you are thinking of cloistered life and live in Canada I really would give them a visit, contact them, etc.
IgnatiusofLoyola
The next time Vee8 logs in, maybe she'll see this thread, and respond. Or, you could try sending her a PM. Vee8 is Canadian and has discerned Carmelite Communities, mostly in Canada. She may be able to answer some of your questions.
truthfinder
Thanks Sr Mary Catherine for posting about the OPs. For Canadians close enough to know the geography, it's in Squamish, and they were located in Langley (irrc) for several years before making the move. Pia Jesu
Just in case Vee8 didn't provide this...there is a list of addresses/contact info for Discalced Carmelite communities in Canada at http://www.ocd.pcn.net/ocd/n2_canada.htm Sr. Mary Catherine is right about the beautiful surroundings of the Queen of Peace Monastery in British Columbia. Interestingly, the nuns came from different U.S. communities--and were sponsored by the Farmington Hills, Michigan group. vee
The Zephyr Carmel often has Latin Mass according to their calendar page here http://www.myvocationislove.ca/web/index.php/en/calendar/month.calendar/2015/02/19/- and the occasional Byzantine rite one as well! krissylou
The Daughters of St. Paul are in Toronto. It's definitely an active congregation, so if you're looking at monasteries this probably wouldn't be what you're looking for (although God has been known to play tricks like this!) and wouldn't have the Latin Mass. But they have habits (modified, but still definitely habits) and their spirituality is very centered on the Eucharist. I think they may have a presence in Quebec as well, but that would be a different province. It's an international congregation and United States/English Speaking Canada is one province, so sisters go back and forth between the US and Toronto. krissylou
And while the Daughters of St. Paul are definitely an active community, they have a pretty intense prayer schedule. Daily mass, plus morning and evening prayers, plus a daily hour of adoration, plus a half hour of personal prayer. It's certainly no monastery but if you're not JUST looking at cloisters, maybe that would be enough?
truthfinder
Zephyr I would definitely suggest - I believe the vast majority of their Sunday Masses are now EF, and about half the weekday Masses. I do think it would be difficult for an English speaker to enter there - they originated in Hong Kong and I believe many do not speak English or at least not very well.
