franciscanheart
Not wanting to completely hijack the Language Nerd thread, I'm creating another just for the Swedish-inclined.Du är välkommen. ;)(I have a feeling this will get moved to the Lame Board which is lame because I don't enter that area of the phorum.) PhuturePriest
I'm currently destroying the Swedes as Poland in Empire: Total War because the Protestant snot rags declared war on me. :|

franciscanheart
I just did the first three lessons in DuoLingo. It's funny to me that their first and most important basics are "man", "woman", "drinks", "water", "eats", "apple", "boy", and "girl". So now I can say "a man and a woman", "a girl and a boy", "the man drinks water", and so on...
Amppax
I currently have no desire to be a Swede, no. It's probably due to the fact that I say I'm from Switzerland, and the invariable response is, "Oh, Sweden?" <_<

Thank you! :) It's encouraging that I can already figure out a lot of it. The hardest part right now is listening to it spoken, and so quickly. I just can't believe that I speak as fast in English as they do in Swedish. Makes my brain hurt.Question: Why "men kommer" and not just "men"? marigold
Bit of a typo I think. Should be 'men hans familj kommer från Polen.' And... we're actually very boring people.

Can't put my finger on it, but I'm definitely interested enough to learn the language and maybe make a trip in 2017. :photo:
Ash Wednesday
Bit of a typo I think. Should be 'men hans familj kommer från Polen.' And... we're actually very boring people. Except when you're drinking!Perhaps you could clarify because I always thought that in the beginning of the sentence, it's noun and then verb (Hon gillar fisk...) but in the latter part of a sentence, it's the verb followed by the noun. (gillar hon fisk). Perhaps does usage of "men" reset the order? It would be easier if it was always noun followed by the verb at all times! (Hon gillar fisk! Jag är arg! Jag kan inte sova! Katten är söt!) :kitten:
franciscanheart
"Jag är arg" is my favorite phrase to say after "Sov gott".
CrossCuT
From what Ive learned about Swedes, the only thing I can say Im not so much looking forward to is how much value they put into not being too individualistic. On one hand, sure I can take that...but on the other ehhh. I read the blog of quite a few US to Sweden expats and one woman commented on this in particular. She was born and raised in the south so going from the Southern US to Norther europe was a big change. The Swedes have a word called Lagom (that doesnt translate well) but essentially means "just enough" or "just right". Like, I just want a lagom of butter on my toast. This idea kind of spreads into the social parts of sweden...where they dont really like it when people stick out; they like it when we blend. Now Im a crazy idealistic person so I will have to see how that feels. I dunno. Maybe its not even a big deal but its the one thing Im mildly apprehensive about. Maybe thats just the american in me. I like that everyone kind of melds together, that no one is really overly concerned with anyone else or how brightly they shine.
