DojoGrant
A friend and I, both recently 21, will be heading to some casinos tonight. Wanted to know if anyone had been before and could offer some tips (not for winning, just for having fun). Is $25 sufficient to play some games for a few hours? Sojourner
I've been once, it wasn't all that fun, in my experience ...

justfran
I've never been to a casino before, but I have been a curious onlooker for many a mahjong game at my aunt's place in China. TIP: If you win something, take the money and run. I heard about this dude in the UK or something who apparently sold everything he had, put his entire life savings on a game of roulette...and won. He did the smart thing, I think, and took his winnings right there (I may be mistaken).
DojoGrant
Yeah he could have done it again, but he didn't. No, I'm not crazy, and the amount I take is the amount I can afford to lose (ie, I won't go back and cash in my credit card or something). But I want to have enough that in 30 minutes I won't have anything left to do because I'm a terrible gambler or something. I'm just going to have fun. Winning would just be icing. Pio Nono
JMJ 6/11 - Tenth Friday DojoGrant, I've been to a few casinoes and horse tracks (since I turned 18, I think I've ended up winning a few bucks on the whole), and I don't have much advice, other than... 1.) If you play the tables, make sure right off the bat to tell the dealer that you've never played. People might think you're a shark until they realize that you really haven't gambled before. 2.) Slots are worthless. A casino/track should be a social atmosphere where fraternity is shared and strengthened - slots destroy this aspect altogether. 3.) Don't take any credit cards with you - in fact, if you have a money clip, only take your money and your ID. I've never fallen victim to the gambling bug (whereby someone begins to think, "I can spare another $20 - where's the ATM?"), but I've had to stop friends from blowing their money. 4.) If you play the tables, count cards. That's all I have. Hope it helps.
Pio Nono
JMJ 6/11 - Tenth Friday And as a joke, I've always said that I pray God when I die, I die at a casino or a horse track, since I know there will be a priest to give me the Last Rites. Tony
I been wondering something.. so I think this is the best chance I have at asking this: Is being a "professional gambler" a sin? I mean I know gambling in itself isnt a sin, but to excess in it is.. but there are the folks that have succesfully made a living playing poker and such.. would this be considered "excessive"? Thanks
p0lar_bear
We gambled with like 3 or 4 dollars in Prague one time... We didn't know how to use the machines so we were just hitting buttons, but we still managed to break even (I think we might have been up quite a bit at one point...) It was amusing, and my friend was able to use the restroom...
homeschoolmom
Yeah, what Pio Nono said regarding ATM cards and credit cards... leave them at home. Some casinos have cheap food... eat a lot... gamble a little... have fun...
Kilroy the Ninja
Your best bet is perhaps the roulette table, but you have to play smart. Don't take the sucker bets (0, 00, etc), but do place several bets at one time on the crosses between the numbers. That way you up your odds of your number hitting. The safest bets there are usually black or red, odd or even. If you do got to roulette, make sure you pay attention to what's going on before you bet. See if you can learn the game first. Black jack has some pretty good odds for the player. But don't take out the "insurance" bet. It's a sucker bet and always favors the house. Baccarte is one of the most misundertood games out there, but easy to play. You bet on either the player or the bank. Always bet on the bank.(house). Video poker is kind of a joke. Play it if you enjoy it. And if you're going anywhere near the one armed bandits (which can be really fun) steer clear of the "gimmick" ones. Stick with the traditional three wheel machines (Usually the ones with "Diamond" in the name) and stay away from the all video machines. (Even though ALL of the machines are controlled by computers. Supposedly randomly. But there is NOTHING random about anything that has been programmed... it's all based on math somewhere down the line). Always look for the payback percentages usually found on signs on the tops of the banks of slots. Look for the highest percentage and play those machines. Also, depending on where you are going to gamble, play the slots closest to the main entry ways as those are usually "looser" to entice people to come in and play. Your other best bet in slots is to at least play the 25 cent slots and nothing lower as you're less likely to make back what you put in on the lower slots. $1 slots are the best deal, but the money does go fast there. Make sure you wear a watch as there are NO clocks in a casino. Also, be VERY sure of the amount of money you are willing to lose and STICK WITH THAT AMOUNT. Commit yourself to the idea that once that money's gone, you're done. Don't play your winnings, put them away until your original seed amount is gone and then ask yourself if you really want to gamble away what you've won, or call it a night. Go in with the attitude of having fun rather than trying to make money and you will have fun. Tip your waitresses well, especially if the drinks are comp. Enjoy! thicke
One extra note on the slot machines. There is always one near every door that pays more than the others. If you can find that one and sit at it, it'll be gold. But, these machines never pay a jackpot.... You wouldn't happen to be going to Tunica would you? If so, maybe I can talk my wife letting us drive down and meet you.
