Leo was like that for a bit. Like, for a while he'd only say milk in French. If he really wants something, he'll say s'il te plait instead of please.

Precious.

My mum always tells the story of when I realised I spoke two different languages to my parents. I was maybe two-three. We were all looking out the window one day, and I saw a car pass by and said, 'Titta, bil!' to my mum, and then turned to my dad and said, 'Look, car!' And then she says I stopped dead with the strangest expression on my face and looked back and forth at them, realising what had just happened.  :hehe2:

I took two years of Spanish in high school, then I lived with Mexicans for nine months, so between the two I got a decent handle on the language.  This semester I'm taking Spanish 3 because I want to improve and hopefully eventually become fluent for real. :mex:  I love Spanish though, and I love the thrill of being able to speak and understand a foreign language!

I am currently learning the glory that is the German language. I'm in the beginning stages, but I'm very conflicted as to what language I should devote myself to. I like German, but if I had to choose I'd honestly rather learn ancient Greek or Latin. Even Hebrew would be preferable, actually.

I'm probably going to have to learn German if I wanna do a PhD.

When it comes to choosing a language, my advice is to pick the one(s) you're actually going to use. If you're a Russian lit enthusiast, learn Russian, etc.

Hm... This is hard for me. I'm a Catholic enthusiast, and I love reading documents and old prayers, so Latin is the most practical language in that sense.

What? I thought you were into Tibetan Buddhism.

I actually did research Tibetan Buddhism not too long ago.

I had to learn German for archaeology. And French. So many site reports are still in the original languages, so you have to be able to read them.

My friend is a linguistics major, and he told me I must learn a language and under no circumstances can it be French. Everyone learns French. It's annoying. Other languages exist. I feel like the only reason people learn French is because in America we have this perception of all things French being refined and romantic, which is weird considering French people are notorious d-bags.

Well here everyone learns Spanish, not French. Whatever language you choose, do so because you like the language, no matter what others think of it. I got a lot of flak for taking German because people thought it "ugly." But I liked it, and I needed it for my field. I've come to appreciate French more the more I learn. I really loved Hebrew and Middle Egyptian.

Also, in a lot of disciplines, people learn French because it's an incredibly important language for their subject. That's a silly assertion anyway, everyone learns Spanish.

It's quite interesting how World War II has made the culture very biased against anything German. I hear constantly from people that German sounds super angry and mean, but then I show them a clip of Germans speaking, and they tell me it "doesn't sound like real German." I then have the privilege of explaining to them that watching 2 seconds of a speech by Hitler is not a good reference for what 99% of Germans sound like when they talk, no more than listening to 2 seconds of a speech from Al Sharpton is a good point of reference for how 99% of English-speaking people sound.

Behold how real Germans sound when they speak:

Their accents almost sound French, really.
