Language Nerd Thread

For the past few months, I've been studying Biblical Hebrew - and I love it. I love the look of the alphabet and how compact it is, how it sounds, how you construct sentences with it (especially this - after Latin and Greek I'm glad to be working with a language where syntax actually matters).

A decade ago I would have said that I had no affinity for studying languages, when, really, I just hadn't found a language that I had a good reason to be studying. I wish I had gotten the ball rolling on this stuff sooner in my life, but better late than never. Actually, if I did an undergrad again, it would likely be in linguistics.

Feel free to use this thread to talk about your own language-nerd stuff.

I took Chinese last year. No time to continue this year, but I fully intend to study it again long term when I have graduated.

I loved studying biblical Hebrew! I don't remember a whole lot, mainly the Shema, Genesis 1:1, and some other bits. I also loved studying Middle Egyptian. I prefer studying dead languages because I don't have to speak them. ;) I really enjoy languages in general, just reading them, not speaking.

I'm a language nerd when it comes to Spanish poetry. I like to read translations and I'll be like NO NO NO that translation is missing the subtlety of this word, or not using the right English word to capture the Spanish richness.

Have you ever read any of John of the Cross's Poetry?

Best wishes in your studies!

I know St. John Cantius in Chicago has added Hebrew to its list of language classes (they already have Latin and Greek classes).

Me, I need to brush up on my Polish.

I studied a bit of Hebrew on my own steam when I was in college, and I don't think anything has really topped the thrill of walking into the British Library one day and being able to read 'Abraham' in Hebrew without having to stop and think about it.

why do we have so many linguistics freaks here??

to talk of specialty is a bit hilarious because i've barely started, but everything i've done so far is aimed towards being able to become a fieldworker, to be more precise, working in language documentation and revitilisation of endangered languages.

I often think this about some Bible translations!

Have you ever read Paul Goodman?  You might enjoy some of his work on communication, he wrote a lot about communication as a response to our environment and expression of ourselves, not merely a code for conveying information. Another good book is "The Alphabetization of the Popular Mind" by Ivan Illich and Barry Sanders, about oral societies and how the alphabet changed our relationship to language (they draw on the work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord, and people like Walter Ong).

To rephrase: I like that I usually don't have to go chasing after the subject, object, etc.
