While you obviously know the answer to the question you just asked, I think it is quite clear that previous papal condemnations of liberalism, freedom of religion, etc., remain relevant today and do deserve some attention. Prevailing attitudes among Catholics seem sometimes to fall prey to those tendencies which were previously condemned, and therefore with prayer and sobriety it would probably behoove us to evaluate both the older and newer teachings and see if we modern Catholics are in need of ongoing correction. Serious question, just curious Thank you. Neither were infallibly proclaimed but Roman Catholics are obliged to assent even in non-infallible teachings with one major exception. With that said JPII never explained why Mortallium Animos was incorrect, were simply presented with the opposing view. It's clear to me which of the two is more consistent with our tradition.
