Could be , but it feels too dark for that.

The colors or the portrayal?

Well some old pictures do turn dark. We have a few here that are like that. Or it could just be made to look dramatic. I don't think it looks that bad.

Why do you think it feels dark?

Because the guy is falling over! The other maybe-shepherds are standing off to the side, and they don't even seem to notice this major revelation happening just a few yards away.

But I have no other topics to recommend...

Since this is a picture of an old picture, it might not be that clear. To me it seems like the shepherd in the back is not

only facing the angles, but has his hands together like he is praying.

I don't know about you, but if an angle all of a sudden appeared out of no where, falling on my kiester could defiantly be an option. Besides! He may have been sitting or laying down before the angles came anyway. It looks like there is a fire right next to them.

To each his own.

It is hard to tell, but to me the figure in the center looks like a Franciscan. First I thought perhaps the Temptation of St. Anthony, but I do not know enough about the iconographic conventions of that subject to know what such an image should look like.
