Spem in alium
So, I need to raise money for a research trip I'm planning to take next year to the UK for my doctorate. I'm already on a scholarship, but that's really for living expenses. I applied for research funding but wasn't successful. I work very casually as a high school tutor (my scholarship stipulates I can't work more than 8 hours a week), but have lost a few clients with the end of the school year here. I have a very busy December/Christmas coming up, and there's a good chance I'll be moving out of home around that time, so the possibility of me taking a casual job over the summer is not likely. There is a chance I may be able to work for my university as a tutor early next year, but that's not definite and not sure if it would be a paid job. I already have a bit saved up, but will likely need extra funding so that a) I still have money to live, and b) I can pay off my debt from my undergraduate degree. Any clues/tips/ideas? All will be considered. :) Edited November 14, 2014 by Spem in alium

Spem in alium
Make things and sell them? Hmm, nice. I hadn't thought of that. I enjoy making stuff, so could look in to selling it. Thanks!
Slappo
Buy and resell on ebay or amazon. Garage sales, craigslist, facebook buy sell trade groups, estate sales, and thrift stores are all places to find valuable items for cheap that can be resold. Takes a while to learn what's valuable, but if you have a smart phone you can look it up right away. I once bought a battery charger for a $700 cordless vacuum cleaner from salvation army for $5 that I resold for $45. reddit.com/flipping is a dedicated forum for this. Catherine Therese
Remind me again what your research area is? Does the 8 hours per week funding stipulation apply to holiday periods between semesters? Perhaps a summer job in retail? Or a temp 6 weeks office admin contract? Contractors can make a killing... when I was working as a project manager I had a data entry contractor that I paid upwards of $45AUD per hour... and that wasn't anything special because I was very careful with my budget - that was the going market rate for that kind of work. Thanks for this. My field is art history (medieval), specialising in manuscripts. I believe so. The information I received says I am permitted to work a maximum of 8 hours per week or up to 240 hours per year in paid employment. I think I receive scholarship payments even outside of the academic year, so the restrictions are likely to continue all year. I certainly haven't worked that many hours in tutoring, so that would give me the ability to apply in December for something if I wanted. I think I'd go okay in admin. The main reason I'm hesitant to apply for a job as such is because I'm likely to soon be moving out of home and don't really know what my schedule will be, so don't even really know in what location I should be applying. I also don't have a heap of experience (tutoring has really been my main job, and I really enjoy it), so I do get a bit hesitant when it comes to applying for things, as I really have no idea where to start. I'll likely have stuff I'll get rid of with the move, so selling could definitely be an option. And I hadn't thought about reselling. Sounds like it could be good to try. Here's the correct link to that reddit page: http://www.reddit.com/r/Flipping/ I just listened to an episode of "The Radical Personal Finance" podcast about "How to Make Your Entire Living on Craigslist," which is an interview with someone who hit rock bottom with about $100 to his name, and started picking up free items on craigslist that he could resell for a tidy profit. The major tip I picked up was offering $10-20 for a free item helps ensure someone else won't beat you to the punch, although you also need to be keeping tabs on what's being posted. Can't say that I personally have found anything worth bothering with, but you're mileage may vary.

Gabriela
I have some ideas: 1. Sell drugs 2. Sell your body (providing it's good—although some people really won't care anyway) 3. Ask your department if you can have permission to work just a few hours more in a second job. Mine will allow this so long as it doesn't interfere with my studies. My last department allowed it too, with express permission. 4. Sell handmade babies on etsy
TheLordsSouljah
Haha Spem I'm in the same boat myself. NET fundraising. So excited for you! :) I've done bake sales, I'm selling a stack of things that I really just don't need, some textbooks that I'm SO over, babysitting, making and selling rosaries, etc. I"m hoping to make some nun dolls from different convents and sell them.... I'll see how it goes. Best of luck! :)

Ancilla Domini
Invent some gadget or knick-knack that no one needs but everyone will buy, like this guy, who made fake plastic wishbones. Sell it and make millions! :bananarap: You're welcome. :hehe2:
