Mother Mary Elias Of The Blessed Sacrament

Teresita

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I have recently discovered the wonderful Carmelit Prioress, Mother Mary Elias of the Blessed Sacrament and would like to learn more about her. If anyone can suggest any websites, books, etc. I would be grateful. Also, does anyone know where Mother Mary Elias is buried and if her tomb is accessible to visitors/pilgrims?

On a side note, I thought I saw something recently posted here about VeniJesuAmorMi concerning her recent reception of the habit and was wondering if anyone had any information or pictures. I followed her discernment, especially towards the end, before she entered Carmel and found her posts very inspirational and edifying.

Thanks in advance! God bless you and Our Lady keep you!

We need Chiqui or Gracian . I know there is a blog out there with Carmel, Our Lady's Dovecote in the title & I do believe she has a post or two about Mother Elias. :)

As for VJMA, I'm not certain how she is doing, but someone on here should be able to give at least a general answer or a pm ;).

I believe Chiquitunga could also provide this answer, if I'm not mistaken.

:hijack: Charbel, I just wanted to say I added you as a friend because not only do I like your posts, but I frequent the Divine Liturgy at a Maronite shrine. Now if we could get some Maronite Rite Carmelites over here in the USA, I'd be all set! :hehe2:

Praised be Jesus Christ! Here's the old thread on her & there's a link to an online book there too, The Dove with the Scarlet Collar, http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/130434-mother-mary-elias-of-the-blessed-sacrament/ And the sermon there was made into a video (but not by the priest who gave it) There aren't the greatest variety of pictures there (and the picture of St. Therese has her nose blurred or something) but it's nice the guy made the video so Mother Elias could be better known.

Mother Mary Elias was originally buried in a public Catholic cemetery in Grand Rapids, as the Carmel did not have a cemetery on their enclosed grounds (some do and some don't). But when the community built a new monastery and moved to Ada, MI http://carmelitenuns.org/ she was transferred to the enclosed cemetery there. Thus, it is not possible to visit since it's within their enclosure, http://binged.it/1qMC0LH

VJAM is doing very well according to her letters home I have heard. There are no pictures to share as the Carmel she entered generally does not allow them to be posted publicly, although a couple have shown up here and there (though I'm not sure if the Carmel is aware of them) But anyway, again, she's doing well. Please keep her in prayer!

p.s. and yes, she recently received the Holy Habit! :nun3:

another story about her here, http://carmeloftraversecity.org/our-little-yet-mighty-king/  that statue is a replica of the original one brought from Mexico, and Buffalo and Alexandria Carmels have replicas of Him too. Ada has the original which is put out in the public chapel on Christmas day until the Epiphany.

My mom and her friend visited the Buffalo Carmelite monastery last month on my request (I wasn't able to go with them because of school and work).  According to her biography, Mother Elias created the monastery in St. Therese's name on the day she was canonized - May 17, 1925 - because of a promise she made when she and her companion were in front of a firing squad because of Catholicism being outlawed in Mexico and she was caught.  She promised St. Therese that if she saved their lives, she would build a monastery in her honor.  The day the monastery was dedicated, the nuns and visitors reported smelling roses in the hallways (none of the windows were open).  My mom said the monastery in Buffalo is GORGEOUS!

Also, in the booklet I received from Mother Miriam, the current prioress of Buffalo, the other story of Mother Elias is astonishing, as well.  She and her companion had fled Mexico and were on a train.  While they were still on the train, the ticketmaster was coming around and no religious articles were allowed on board.  Mother Elias was dressed in disguise but always carried with her a statue of the Infant Jesus, which was holding, wrapped up in a blanket.  The ticketmaster remarked that the baby she was carrying made no noise and wasn't moving and started to unwrap the bundle to see what was inside.  Imagine his surprise when the statue came to life and started crying!

Here is a link about her life, too:

Dear Chiqui,

Thanks so much for all the information and links on Mother Mary Elias. You are a veritable treasure trove of information about Carmel, past and present!

Thank you also for the links to info on the miraculous statue of the Infant Jesus which featured in Mother Mary Elias' life. I had no idea that the statue had such a wonderful history even prior to the incident with Mother Elias on the train. What a wonderful Carmelite she is and how prominently divine assistance and divine intervention occurred in her life. I wish she were better known and that one could visit her tomb.

Do you know if any of the Carmels founded by her offer holy cards/prayers for her canonization, or if a cause for such was ever begun?

Once again, please accept my gratitude. May Our Divine Savior and His Immaculate Mother reward you as only They can!

Chiqui,

Thanks so much for this. You mentioned this picture is on the slideshow on the homepage. Do you have a link or am I missing something here? Would love to see more pictures of Mother Mary Elias. Thanks again!

Dear Brandelynmarie,

Thanks so much for the this and the previous information. BTW, who is the Carmelite on your avatar? She looks so young and so joyful!

Thanks again and may the Queen of Carmel shelter you in Her loving care!

I had forgotten about this too, a small blurb about the Buffalo Carmel & Mother Elias:
