Ebola

The CDC has said that a carrier is not contagious until symptoms appear.

And the problem with this lies in where these people are once symptoms do appear...on an airplane? Train station? At the mall? Edited by brandelynmarie

From the TheHill.com article which the TheAntiMedia.com article references:

"Still, there is almost no precedent for a human virus mutating to become transmissible in a different way, a key piece of evidence in weighing whether that kind of shift is likely for Ebola.

"We have so many problems with Ebola, let’s not make another one that, of course, is theoretically possible but is pretty way down on the list of likely issues," infectious diseases expert William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University told Scientific American."

Dr. Frieden's position was misrepresented in the very first sentence of the article. He has never claimed that "the virus might be airborne". His quote:

"The rate of change [with Ebola] is slower than most viruses, and most viruses don't change how they spread," [Frieden] said. Frieden is unofficially spearheading the U.S. response to Ebola.

"That is not to say it's impossible that it could change [to become airborne]," he continued. "That would be the worst-case scenario. We would know that by looking at ... what is happening in Africa. That is why we have scientists from the CDC on the ground tracking that." Edited by GregorMendel

Finally, here is the Rest of Dr. Osterholm's quote, taken from the original CNN article which TheHill.com used:

"Speculation that Ebola virus disease might mutate into a form that could easily spread among humans through the air is just that: speculation, unsubstantiated by any evidence."

Remember when Wesley's friend got AIDS on Mr. Belvedere? They shared popsicles, but it didn't transmit.

Remember when Wesley took up ballet? He wasn't gay and eventually his dad took his side.

Remember when Wesley and his friends made fun of the mentally handicapped janitor? They said sorry.

Remember when Kevin took up that escort job and the wealthy old lady proposed to him? He said no. But he thought about it.

Remember when people thought that Marilyn Manson was Kevin from Mr. Belvedere? Was he?

He was Kevin's friend. Paul from Wonder Years.

Okay, he actually wasn't. But it was a pretty funny rumor.

A third person has just tested positive for the virus and she traveled on 2 flights thru airports before she knew. If I was a science fiction writer I could imagine a scenario where people who test positive for Ebola would be put to death immediately to prevent the airborne spread of the disease because dead people don't breathe. That would be horrifying.

Yeah, the TSA won't let an old guy on board with a pocket knife but someone exposed to eloba with a fever? Not a threat at all. Fortunately she wasn't bleeding or vomiting. They're finding and isolating the people on the flights. Hopefully that will help.

For some good news, the first nurse is in stable condition and seems to be doing well. Someone who beat the disease flew in and gave her blood. Thank God for small heros. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/dallas-nurse-battling-ebola-shes/story?id=26178968

Isn't it amazing that Dr Without Borders have treated a couple thousand Ebola victims in Africa whilst only a few got Ebola, but here one patient in a hospital infects multiple caregivers?

It's my understanding that Doctors Without Borders have different decontamination techniques than most American hospitals. And for example, that they would use full hoods for protective gear instead of face shields where facial skin is exposed. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact source where I read about this.
