I think it's nice you've decided on a college and are doing what you want to do. Yeah, personally I'd never go into debt for college, but you know what? that's my life. Feel free to explore options, but don't feel like you need to defend your decisions. They're yours to make; nothing here is a mortal sin so I can never know what truly is best for your life. I have my strong opinions, but that's all they are. Best of luck to you FP.

Franciscan University is roughly 30k a year now I think, and federal loans cap at 27k over a 4 year period

That tuition is obscene.

Franciscan's only flaw is the inordinate amount of students there who smoke. I hate smoke with all my being. A moment's whiff of cigarette smoke makes me have a whopping headache, not to mention the fact it smells worse than death.

And that they charge kids getting a liberal arts degree 30k a year.

That is shameful and they should be shut down for doing it.

I think the phrase "Don't hear what I'm not saying." is in order. Please stop trying to make it seem like I'm attacking a moderator. I've always liked Deus te Amat.

Unfortunately, unless I get a 35 the next time I take the ACTs in December, I will not be getting a free ride, and will thus get substantial debt in the tens of thousands. It's the nature of the beast, unfortunately.

DO. NOT. TAKE. ON. SUBSTANTIAL. DEBT. FOR. A. LIBERAL. ARTS. DEGREE.

Bahahaha, 30k is nothing; John Paul the Great University costs over 40k a year. That being said, they go by the quarter rather than the semester, so they get their degrees in three years rather than four.

Framing effect; cognitive bias. :|

You end up with the same $120,000 either way.

And I am forced to agree with Hasan that for a liberal arts degree, that kind of cost does not make economic sense. Of course, if the experience itself is worth a hundred grand, then so be it. But... yeah.

30 (or 40k) is the low end for private schools, most run in the 50-60k range.

Okay, maybe not most. But a lot.

The brother of one of my friends is going to Holy Cross, and the tuition there is $60,000 per year, and he's getting a degree in I think philosophy. When I first heard that, I told her "I would call it 'Holy Carp!'" to which she then unsurprisingly said "That's actually what my dad calls it!"

Any college that charges that much for a liberal arts degree without a 100% guarantee of turning you into the next Tim Staples should be charged for crimes against humanity.

I think I asked this before, but does this tuition also include residence?

Yes. Before residence, Benedictine is $20,000.
