I'm in a good and zen-like mood right now, so I don't want to ruin that by listening to Kaspar speak. :P

Nihil Obstat

Further, I think some of the implications Cardinal Kasper made in the interview are dangerous. He sounded both dangerously agenda-driven and embarrassingly peevish. I think the interview was highly inappropriate.

Well, I definitely agree with what he said here:

"But the problem is that some media reduce everything at the synod to the question of Communion for the divorced and remarried people. The agenda of the synod is much, much broader and concerns the pastoral challenges of family life today. The problem of divorced and remarried is one problem, but not the only one."

Also, I think the questions (and their implications) were actually worse than his answers. As someone who hasn't been caught up in all this recent controversy, I thought his responses were quite innocuous.

Nihil could probably give a very detailed answer as to why what he said isn't so innocuous, as he's very knowledgeable about this particular subject matter.

At face value, though, it isn't so bad.

I understand his theology is way messed up, and a few things he said were like, "Eeeehhh, you're pushin' it," but overall I didn't really think this particular interview was all that bad. You could clearly see the agenda behind the interviewer, though.

While I see your point and agree to a certain extent, Cardinal Kasper no longer has the privilege of saying "we should focus on other stuff." He has publicly supported a very seriously erroneous misunderstanding of canon law and reception of Holy Communion. If he wants to back away from that subject then his error needs to be publicly corrected.

In my opinion, his comments regarding his brothers in the episcopate who published their response to Kasper's errors were completely out of line. Please, calling them agenda driven? Calling them fundamentalists? It veers into the absurd.

Not committing sacrilege is the noblest of agendas, in my opinion, but Kasper obviously has different ideas on the matter.
