Ancilla Domini
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/21/world/europe/albania-pope/ Confused...did Pope Francis, in so many words, just condemn the entire 11th-13th century crusading movement, here? :think2:
Didacus
He refers to those who have perverted the 'religious spirit'; where the crusades so perverted in your view?
Ancilla Domini
He refers to those who have perverted the 'religious spirit'; where the crusades so perverted in your view? It was not the "perverted the religious spirit" to which I was referring; it was the, "Pope Francis rebuked militants who act in the name of religion, saying no one can act as the "armor of God."" Ancilla Domini
How do you understand the 'armor of God' then? "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." (Ephesians, 6:11) I am assuming that it means fighting the good fight, i.e., fighting God's battles, fighting against the devil.
Sister Marie
"Let no one consider themselves to be the 'armor' of God while planning and carrying out acts of violence and oppression," Pope Francis told diplomats at the presidential palace. "May no one use religion as a pretext for actions against human dignity and against the fundamental rights of every man and woman, above all, the right to life and the right of everyone to religious freedom." - from the article you cited, emphasis mine Do you disagree with this? Basilisa Marie
http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/21/world/europe/albania-pope/ Confused...did Pope Francis, in so many words, just condemn the entire 11th-13th century crusading movement, here? :think2: Condemn? No. But it wouldn't be a stretch to guess that he thinks they might not have been the best idea. Or maybe he has a different opinion about the Crusades. I'd argue that most people who went on the Crusades did so for good reasons, or at least many of them did. But no pope today would call for the Crusades. We live in a different time. Basilisa Marie
Seriously? No. Of course not. He's talking about ISIS.
chrysostom
Confused...did Pope Francis, in so many words, just condemn the entire 11th-13th century crusading movement, here? :think2: Yes! Of course we should read his words in the worst possible light, all the time! That speech did it for me. I'm quitting the Church and becoming a sede. Then I'm going to get married, outbreed you all, and get banned multiple times on Phatmass AND fisheaters. I'll last .5 seconds on Catholic Answers Forums before an IP permaban. blazeingstar
The thing about the Crusades is they were Christian lands that were overtaken (often brutally) by islamic extremists. (wow, haven't heard that one before). Of the countries that were invaded only Spain returned to Christianity. Thing is, the "right to live" supersedes the "right to religious freedom" I don't think that the Crusades really fall under this. What he would be condemning is ISIS and killing those who support immoral causes.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Anyone who attacks with violence in the name of GOD is evil, whomsoever defends himself or herself whether violently or not in the name of God is not evil. There perhaps is a heat of the momment rule also, revenge can only worsen things. Jesus iz LORD! Onward christian souls.
