Swearing

It is a hard habit to break, I still haven't. I was advised though that after every time I swore to say an Our Father, Hail Mary and a Glory Be to help to stop. Also that *as he put it* it might also prove to be a deturrent as well.

I stopped saying it out loud and moved it in my head. Than I stopped alltogether. But I wasn't active Catholic at the time and that would have been a hersey to do. Gradualism (sp?) I need to stop sinning now I can't ween (sp?) myself off.

I agree that swearing is a sin when it's done because of one of the capital causes of sin. I don't swear at all anymore, unless i'm reading it or something.

I just don't see "finding a maggot in your rice bar" to be one of the capital causes of sin, though. That happened to my friend at school, she was almost about to eat it.

Swearing, i don´t think is a sin...but your anger is...and what you are feeling toward that somene or something

Exactly! To simply say a word might not be a sin, but it can be an occasion of sin (anger, causing scandal, etc.) and should be avoided pretty much at all costs. I'm not perfect, I use vulgarities sometimes and I know its really, frankly, a disgusting habit so I try not to.

Now to clarify the terms we use to describe "cuss words"--this is what they really mean, even though we tend to use them interchangably.

[b][u]Swearing[/u] is taking oaths like in court--not a sin
[u]Cursing[/u] is to say "beaver dam" in any context--[i]always[/i] a sin
[u]Vulgarities[/u] is the F-word, sh**, piss, etc.--sometimes a sin.[/b]

but when using vulgarities...most of the time you are sinning in your actions...and in your thought

if your parents don´t allow you to say those words...then it is always a sin
if a friend has asked you not to use them...you are betrasying them, etc.

but I can see where it wouldn´t be a sin

good point, i've also found that just by hearing someone else swear it can lead me into angry thoughts.

hey is there anyone english here or is it just my hopefull imagination ????

anyway to get to the point after being in a noncatholic school for several years i have slowly started to swear more and more and now i cant stop but after reading all these great points i think starting from today i shall start not to swear it will be hard but it will be my new resolution

when ever i hear a friend ake the Lord's name in vain (which is something i NEVER do!)i always try to say a prayer in reparation
