veritasluxmea
The overwhelming tolerance in here is making me feel ill. Good grief. The need to affirm that they're all right and cool shows what's wrong with society today. I didn't even think it was girly until people brought it up. Some people like them, some people don't, and others are snarky no matter the topic. Welcome to Phatmass.

I was making a joke about how indifferent and mellow Crosscut was. I like people that like to take a stand. :P Not necessarily aggressively, but firmly. CrossCuT
If this was aimed at me, you could have quoted me. Since I work as an organist and choirmaster in the Anglican tradition, I understand both the historical and modern significance of boy's choirs, and I don't think I ever pooh-poohed anyone's talents. I just don't care for it. Choirs of men and boys are a different matter entirely. Although, to be honest, if I had the choice of conducting King's and Trinity, I'd probably go with Trinity. The timbre of the male soprano is just not agreeable to my ear. This of course is a matter of taste, and surely the choir school model is responsible for an innumerable amount of incredible adult male musicians. It just isn't my bag. Music is a strong tradition in my family; we all participate in some way. Some play instruments, some sing etc. I personally love the tone and purity of the children choirs...especially a BA boys choir mostly because its just so beautiful! franciscanheart
Actually I think the OP and first few replies didn't make any distinction, or if they did it was to rubbish 'boys' choirs' or 'children's choirs'. But this type of boys' choir is in a completely different league to the stereotypical rabble which an overworked volunteer tries to get to sing an entrance hymn properly. It's absolutely a different thing. The mental discipline required to not lose your place in Byrd (e.g.) and freak out because nothing sounds 'right' is something you will only find with the kind of intensive training these boys have. Anyone who doesn't like it can, I suppose, just avail themselves of the pile of tambourines or unnecessary vibrato over there in the corner. There's no need to snark on the English choral tradition, even if it be popped for the Top 40. Pretty sure the only input I had was the title of the thread. Which I posted in hopes that the people of phatmass with whom I have been associated for a number of years would give me the benefit of the doubt in addition to using their logical brain to conclude that I must be talking about the synthesized portions of this piece. WHY in God's name would you do that to such lovely music? To make them more palatable to the average ear? PLEASE. That was my point. And Deus Te Amat seemed to understand. Pretty sure Winchester was being Winchester and MAKING A JOKE. You people are uptight. No wonder dUSt is perpetually fending off your whiny drivel: you take yourselves too beaver dam seriously. I was in a children's choir. I raised thousands of dollars to support my local children's choir. I LOVE BOYS CHOIRS. I've attended a number of concerts, have more CDs than is right, and praise the boy choir sound OFTEN. I think they are impressive creatures and I gain much pleasure from listening to the music they create together. I even got to sing with a boy's choir while I was in my city's children's chorus -- which, by the way, was also extremely demanding. But sure, let's go with your opinion: You're right. Everyone else is wrong. We are all terrible people who can't appreciate the real beauty of a good boy choir.
