St. Catherine
Federal Offices closed. I was aware of that, talking to my mom and she told me she gets Friday off. State Offices I'm not so sure of because I know a few people who work for the State and none of them have mentioned anything about the day off. Mrs. Bro. Adam
I don't get a day off (other than my usual) unless all three services aren't moving (UPS, FedEx, and USPS)
Sojourner
Yeah, they had an interesting take on this in a e-newsletter I got from Poynter this morning. Several states followed the President's lead in closing state offices, and all these office closings have a cost for taxpayers. A news station in Spokane, Wash., reported that their county's sheriff's office will be paying $45,000 in holiday pay on Friday -- roughly the yearly salaries of two deputies. The union contract specifies double pay for all hourly employees for every federal holiday, even surprise ones. I'm sure the case is the same in many other parts of the country. So in other words, by declaring this as a holiday, Bush has, in effect, cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
