Catherine Therese
I just watched an episode of Bones where Booth built his shrink's BBQ... and then proceeded to BBQ steaks on it, just like we would here in Oz. When I was in the States, I remember the first time I was told we were having BBQ for lunch and out came a massive tray of chicken all shredded up looking like pulled pork. I recall thinking to myself that BBQ in the States is NOT like BBQ back home. In Australia we cook steaks, we cook meat chunks on skewers, we cook sausages (what y'all call brats... not the same as breakfast sausage) and we cook prawns. We do fun things with potatoes, onions, mushrooms, etc. We grill vegetables. All of this behaviour could be understood as BBQ-ing food. The whole shredded chicken thing really threw me for a culture spin. But there was Booth on the TV, cooking steaks as if he were Aussie. So please, someone sort it out for me - what is it that American's call BBQ?
Aloysius
we do the same thing for BBQ, mate, but sometimes things that include BBQ sauce can be called BBQ, like a BBQ pulled pork sandwich or something... but the actual act of barbecuing is for all that fun stuff you mentioned... methinks you were misled by a sauce. Winchester
Sometimes barbecued meat gets chopped or shredded. It's still been barbecued. Sometimes, filthy liars simply bake or otherwise cook meat, shred it, and flavor it with sauce.
Deus te Amat
My dad just made a nice juicy steak on the grill last night. :hehe: I would say two things 1) what you ate was Southern BBQ. 2) I can't imagine grilling food for that many sisters. That would haveta be a huge grill.
Basilisa Marie
BBQ is different all over the US, because different foods are popular in different places. Southern BBQ will more likely have things like ribs and pulled pork and chicken in lots of sauce. In the midwest it's not BBQ unless it's got brats and saurkraut. Some places do skewers and steaks like you're used to, and some people think simple hamburgers and hot dogs count as BBQ.
blazeingstar
Maybe it's a northeast thing but we have several different type of sausage. Brats are typically beer flavored. Italian sausage is either hot or mild. There is then garlic & cheese, spinach and feta and "southwest" which is hot peppers. They are made from Chicken or Pork or sometimes Beef. Then there's Chineese sausage and Polish Sausage (aka Kielbasa). And breakfast sausage. As far as BBQ. It means different things in different places. On the Eastern seaboard, we have bbq's that involve clam bakes and lobsters and hot dogs (often beef only, casing dogs). Other things we bbq are chicken on the bone, fish, and beef. Kielbasa is also pretty popular. Pulled pork and chicken tend to be something that's rather rare that we see as a southern thing. We don't call it bbq but often douse it in bbq sauce or cook it with liquid smoke. One of the most shocking things about America to outsiders is that we have enormous variety between regions. New England is completely different than the West and South.

Those people are wrong, for the record, and anyone who says otherwise is a damnable liar. Edited August 9, 2014 by FetusPriest387

Vincent Vega
When did you become a Protestant? A while ago. I think I announced it in a dramatic drunken flourish.
