I've been interested in brushing up on my stats.  I want to learn how to program.  So I'm thinking of diving into R.  Do any programy folks have an perspective?

I think it would be worthwhile, but you first really should learn A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, and Q.

I just saw a job listing today that listed R.

I want to learn SQL and the like. Maybe some Java or HTML too.

For real? The South Asian language?

Totally! I've been slightly obsessed with Punjabi culture since I was introduced to Bhangra a couple of years ago.

Probably never will though. Edited by porziuncola

Ever listen to Punjabi hiphop? Saint Soldier does some good socially conscious work from Asia and Humble the Poet is a great example of that coming out of the Canadian Punjabi community.

I've heard Humble the Poet, but I will have to look into Saint Soldier. Thanks!

Are you familiar with Tigerstyle and Doctor Zeus?

I would apologize for hijacking this thread, but as it's hasan's thread I'm really not sorry.

I am not familiar with them. I will look them up.

Sorry, not sorry. Haha.

Actually, we could use a few more South Asian references here on Phatmass.

If you're going to learn a language, LEARN THE LANGUAGE. People who learn how to create a table and think they've arrived make the rest of us batpoo.

There is a Mongo course that indicates some Java background as a prereq, but doesn't indicate it needs to be mastered. If the point of learning something about Java is to learn Mongo, is it necessary to master Java? I was thinking Code Academy's 10 hour course and a friend who said he would help would be fine. I understand Mongo will eventually replace SQL.

I was more thinking of html than java. People say, "I know a little html," and I run the other direction. People who say that usually know next to nothing about current standards.

It can be useful in NationBuilder, a program that let's you build a campaign website. I do fail to see the motivation to learn it unless one is going to use it or use something that requires some knowledge of it.
