CHALDEAN PATRIARCHATE'S APPEAL FOR URGENT HELP S.O.S

The ISIS militants attacked with mortars most of the villages of the plain of Nineveh, during the night of 6th - 7th of August and now they are controlling the area. The Christians, about one hundred thousand, horrified and panicked fled their villages and houses (with) nothing but the clothes on their backs. An exodus, a real via cruces, Christians are walking on foot in Iraq's searing summer heat towards the Kurdish cities of Erbil, Duhok and Soulaymiyia, the sick, the elderly, infants and pregnant women among them. They are facing a human catastrophe and risk a real genocide. They need, water, food, shelter…

Regarding the churches and church properties in the villages now being occupied by the ISIS militants, we have reports of destruction and desecration. The old manuscripts and documents (1500) are being burnt.

As evident to all, the Central Government is incapable of enforcing law and order in this part of the country. There are also doubts about the capacity of the Kurdistan Region alone to defend the fierce advance of the Jihadists. Clearly, there is lack of cooperation between the Central Government and the Regional Autonomous Government. This "vacuum" is profited by the ISIS to impose their rule and terror. There is a need of international support and a professional, well equipped army. The situation is going from bad to worse.

We appeal with sadness and pain to the conscience of all and all people of good will and the United Nations and European Union, to save these innocent persons from death. We hope it is not too late!

Chaldean Christian leader: ISIS 'Systematically Beheading' Children in Iraq

A prominent Christian leader of the Chaldean community unveiled the "systematic beheading of children" and other horrendous crimes committed by ISIS. He said that the Sunni extremists are committing genocide against Christians in Iraq and with the aim to instill the Sharia Law as the law of the land.

In the interview with CNN's Jonathan Mann, Chaldean-American businessman Mark Arabo said that the "world hasn't seen an evil like this for generations."

"There is a park in Mosul, where [ISIS] they actually beheaded children and put their heads on a stick and have them in the park," he explained. "More children are getting beheaded, mothers are getting raped and killed, and fathers are being hung."

Speaking from San Diego over Skype, Arabo called for the international community to offer asylum to the more than 300,000 Christians fleeing and living in neighboring cities.

At a meeting in the White House last week, he said the Chaldean-American leaders and the political leaders are saying that the world should come together to stop these crimes against humanity and help alleviate the sufferings of the Iraqi people.

"The world hasn't seen this kind of atrocity in generations," he said. "This is a crime against humanity. This is much broader than a community or a state. This is crime against humanity. They are doing the most horrendous, the most heart-breaking crimes that you can think of."

When asked about Sunni extremists' targeting of Christians, Arabo said that around 95 percent of Christians have fled, five percent have converted. Also, the ISIS have marked the death stamps on Christian homes, so whoever returns will get killed.

"Christian holocaust is in our midst," he said. "This should never be happening in 2014."

Just last week, the ISIS bombed a church that was 1,800 years old, and have bombed 6 churches so far.

While France is leading the way in offering asylum, Arabo is calling on the US and the United Nations to recognnize that this is a genocide and do more to address this crisis.

"This living nightmare is not going away," he said, "but it is only getting worse."

"The world cannot turn a blind eye."

Not The Philosopher

This is depressing. I don't have much faith in the UN. France is at least welcoming some refugees.

The UN is a big fat joke. They don't know a genocide from a jelly bean.

I wonder if the Patriarch would favor American intervention?

[REUTERS ]: How would you describe the events taking place in Rwanda?

[State Department Spokesperson Christine Shelly]: Based on the evidence we have seen from observations on the ground, we have every reason to believe that acts of genocide have occurred in Rwanda.

[REUTERS]: What's the difference between "acts of genocide" and "genocide"?

[Shelly]: Well, I think the—as you know, there's a legal definition of this ... clearly not all of the killings that have taken place in Rwanda are killings to which you might apply that label ... But as to the distinctions between the words, we're trying to call what we have seen so far as best as we can; and based, again, on the evidence, we have every reason to believe that acts of genocide have occurred.

[REUTERS]: How many acts of genocide does it take to make genocide?

[Shelly]: Alan, that's just not a question that I'm in a position to answer.

well if the American government calls something a genocide, there is all of a sudden some western skin in the game.  Hence the reluctance. Some people would say, based on the things we've signed, a legal obligation, if not a moral duty, to do something about it.

I've just been watching this on the evening news. I cry at the dead kids' funerals, get angry, do nothing, forget about it until the next news bulletin.... ugh.

I wish I could do something. It was a petition that helped raise awareness and free Meriam Ibrahim. The West needs to do something to stop this horror. Like the rest of you, I feel so helpless. All I can do is pray.
