CrossCuT
There are a few book threads on the Lame Board but they are all pretty specific. I thought Id make one big thread for people to throw in their suggestions for good reads. This is specifically going to be for reading entertainment...not really for religious or reflection books and the like. Also, please keep it clean! No lady porn. :paperbag: If you want to suggest a book, follow the below format: Title /Author Genre Cover photo (If possible) Short description of story (no spoilers) Personal recommendation / reasons to read it. Credo in Deum
Title /Author: "White Feather" by Roy F. Chandler Genre: Military, History, Biography. Cover photo (If possible): Short description of story (no spoilers): The book is about one of the greatest snipers that has ever existed. His most famous shot has been immortalized in war movies and TV shows. Personal recommendation / reasons to read it: I have always had an interest in snipers. When I was young I wanted to be a sniper for either the military or SWAT. I also have an interest in history and I like to read about the sacrifices military men and women have made for my country. Plus these stories show the amazing lengths humans will go for their fellow brother/sister in arms and for their own survival.

AnneLine
Great idea, CrossCut! And then you all come in and read with us in the Summer Book Thing thread! But I love the idea of a book recommendation thread... I will go hunt up a few for you. Do you have particular things you do and don't like? Other than what you have stated above? Long, short, historical, fiction, non-fiction? Particular authors you have liked before? (because we might have some ideas that bounce off that....) BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS!!!!!! :bible: :bounce: :like3: Edited August 4, 2014 by AnneLine
CrossCuT
Well I dont want to confine myself to the stuff I normally read. Im trying to spread my wings and venture into territory I dont normally tread in! :) I typically read fiction...specifically the classics but also fantasy and sci fi. But this thread is for everyone! Not just me! :saint2: Edited August 4, 2014 by CrossCuT
CountrySteve21
Could anyone recommend a good historical fiction about medieval Europe or Samurai of Japan? Pax Edited August 5, 2014 by CountrySteve21

CrossCuT
Sabriel by Garth Nix Genre: Fantasy Short description of story (no spoilers): Takes place in a fictional universe where there is a magical half and non magical half. The main character is a girl named Sabriel who finds out she is a necromancer. She uses musical bells to control the dead and basically just goes on an adventure to rid the world of a very bad evil monster. Personal recommendation / reasons to read it: Its a fun book and an easy read for someone who wants to find something exciting! I would probably compare it to the female version of a Harry Potter-esk story? Its pretty fun! There are some humorous characters in there that help break up the seriousness as well. PS. You can purchase any one of the bells as a jewelry charm!!!!!111 :dance2:

chrysostom
Title /Author In Parenthesis / David Jones Genre Epic Poetry / Novel / Semi-autobiographical / Historical Short description of story (no spoilers) The account of an infantry unit primarily in France in the First World War. Personal recommendation / reasons to read it. It is one of my top two favourite books. It's rather dense - you can certainly manage a quick(ish) read-through but even after several re-readings you will not exhaust it. It tells so much and it's so, so beautiful. I need to read this again now as a Catholic - the author was a Catholic convert and I'm sure I would pick up more knowing that perspective. Every page can be pored over indefinitely. It's like having a Vermeer or a da Vinci in your hands. From Wikipedia: T. S. Eliot called it "a work of genius." W. H. Auden considered it "a masterpiece," "the greatest book about the First World War" that he had read, a work in which Jones did "for the British and the Germans what Homer did for the Greeks and the Trojans" in "a masterpiece" comparable in quality to The Divine Comedy. The novelist and poet Adam Thorpe says it "towers above any other prose or verse memorial of that war (indeed, of any war)". The Jones scholar Thomas Dilworth writes that it is "probably the greatest work of British Modernism written between the wars" and "the greatest work of literature in English on war."
