IMHO, at this point I don't think the "nominating people for banishment" thing will work. People are already forming "alliances," good grief. We don't need this to turn into game of thrones.

I would humbly recommend the mods and dUSt getting together privately and doing it themselves. Or, ask for private e-mails if you really really really think someone needs to go. but putting it in public probably will get no nominations, or cliques. or both. Also, that kind of thread wouldn't contribute to the phatmass atmosphere.

Exempt from the standards, or exempt from the exemption?

But srsly, if dUSt wants to change the feel of PM, them he has to decide what and who he wants posting here. It's his phorum and his responsibility to choose who stays. It is a bit cowardly to ask for nominations for crucifixion, I mean banishment.

darnit, I'm out of props.

p.s. exempt from the exemption. :P

IMHO there are people who I disagree with, and at times find rude, but I'd not vote them off because I enjoy the perspective they bring when they're at their best. I think that people shouldn't be banned when they haven't been warned or they haven't breached any of the existing guidelines as specified by the mods. If people are being abusive then that seems clear cut anyway I would have thought. Maybe the guidelines need a refresh and processes or something?
But I think it would be a shame if a Catholic forum was a popularity contest or turned people away. I know some people just see this as pixels but I think what is said and done here does infleuence the faith and atttiude outside this space. Rejection here can put people off the church all totgether and cause damage, so I think sensitivity should be key.

If debate isn't welcome, forwhatever reason, then maybe the debate section is better off closed. If everyone agrees what debate is there? People will be fearful of being honest and expressing conflicts/doubts on serious areas. Ideas expressed here can trickle through after a while. It seems confusing if the goal posts are moved.

Credo in Deum

I hit the submit button just to see what would happen.  It sent my empty submission.   Must be a bug.

I think this is a giant mind experiment Dust is doing where it makes us all reflect deeply and become gushy and tolerant towards each other. "Now that I really think about it, Smith isn't so bad I would feed him to the lions after all." The submission box actually leads to a black hole in space. Whatever, cuz it's working.

I nominate Winchester on grounds of being more popular than me.

That logic is a non-starter - EVERYBODY is more popular than you.

Nothing is going to make me like, Smith.   Nothing.

If people are so sensitive that being banned from PM will turn them ex catholic than either 1 they're immature and there is plenty of years left to grow up; or 2 they have mental problems and God forgives them.

It's not about shutting off debate, it's how and what is debated. There are not black and white rules for internet debate. Dust (hopefully) feels some responsibility for what he allows on a a forum that he makes possible. It's his responsibility, and ultimately his choice.

If there is any dispersions to be cast, then it may be dust's hands off policy until things get out of control or at least unbearably unpleasant.

Have you read Debate Table in the last four years? 60 % of the posters are either incomprehensible or insurmountably illogical. Then there is the improbability that the thread will stay in topic for six consecutive posts. I wouldn't worry about the intellectual benefits of debating on PhatMass.

If Debate Table were closed I wouldn't bat an eyelid (personally. I don't read it much).  And isn't that where we get 90% of hot-blooded posts anyway?

dUSt - Do what you will, but I recommend that one of the criteria for banning be consistently incorrect grammar and/spelling (though reasonable people can disagree about what's a typo and what's a spelling error).

Those are the people I HATE!!!!

Purge - that's the same root from which we derive Purgatory.

So maybe don't ban people, just send 'em to Purgatory - a place on the board where they'll still be members, but they can't post while they're in there.

Although... since they won't then progress to heaven.... maybe it would really just be a Time Out Room.
