veritasluxmea
Do they not wear rings after final profession? No, they and the Nashville Dominicans don't. I've heard that during the Civil War the ND melted their rings for the war effort and haven't worn them since. The DSMME carry on that tradition. I don't know how accurate that is, however. Sr Mary Catharine OP
Dominicans usually didn't wear rings (we didn't until 1987) although the blessing of the rings was in the ceremonial. I don't which monastery stopped wearing them. I suspect after the French Revolution and it just continued. I am happy we do although, for our monastery is actually optional if the sister doesn't wish to wear one!

Sr Mary Catharine OP
Do many sisters choose not to wear it? Will the one who will be final-professed soon wear one? The sisters who entered after 1987 all wear a ring but among the sisters who were professed for many years before there were several who did not choose to wear one. For some it was just that after so many years professed why start now and for a few others it was more theological. They saw not wearing a ring as a sign of their consecration in keeping with poverty. Our first ring ceremony in 1987 was done by Cardinal Ciappi, OP, who blessed all the rings. Sr. Maria Teresa will receive the ring at her solemn profession on Sept 6th. It just came back from the engravers. It's so tiny!
