cappie
Fr. Pat Malone, S.J. died today at the Jose Harper Hospice House, after a long, faith-filled battle with lung and heart problems, resulting from his recovery from bone marrow and stem cell transplants. He was 55 years old. Pat most recently served as the beloved Pastor of St. John’s Parish. Pat was born in 1959. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1992. After his philosophy studies at Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington, Pat was assigned to teach at Marquette University High School, in 1997-98. He studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, and was ordained in 2001. Pat was among those serving the victims after the Twin Towers tragedy in New York City on September 11th, 2001 His memoir of that service was published in 2002, Ground Zero: Love Triumphs All, Liguori Press. From 2001 to 2006, Pat served as an Associate Pastor at St. Luke’s Parish, in St. Paul, Minnesota. During that time he also served as a campus minister at Macalester College, in St. Paul. From 2006 to 2009, Pat was chaplain at the ILAC Mission near Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. Pat was deeply revered by the people he served in the rural communities and by Creighton students and others who studied and served at the Mission. Pat took a break after his time in the DR and was then assigned to St. John’s Parish. He was appointed Pastor of St. John’s in 2012. During much of his ministry, Pat struggled with the aftermath of a bone marrow transplant and two stem cell transplants for a type of leukemia. Among his greatest gifts to us was his steadfast desire to serve others, in the midst of great health setbacks. Pat was always compassionate and able to be present to people. He was self-sacrificing in his generosity, to an inspiring degree. For many who lived with him, who served with him and were cared for by him, Pat will remain an example of faith and trust in God.
