ChristianGirlForever
Good lord, don't these terrorists think before blowing up people? I don't understand.
Norseman82
Spem, please accept my condolences. This is the second incident involving a Malaysian airliner in a few months. It makes one wonder if that airline is being specifically targeted for something.
Nihil Obstat
Really frightening incident. The most frightening part I think is that none of the people who were killed had anything to do with the conflict in the area. Really seems to elevate the threat the conflict poses for international stability.

Norseman82
There are a lot of Ukrainians here. We've had constant coverage of the entire sequence of events. To take down a plane at cruising speeds from 33,000 feet requires a modern sophisticated high tech weapon. This wasn't a lucky shot with a home made rocket. I'm afraid this is going to take this conflict into a whole other level. Recall that it was the German sinking of the Lusitania that was President Wilson's reason for bringing the US into WWI. Nihil Obstat
I heard that the US has banned US flights from flying over eastern Ukraine. I would hope most airlines are revising routes to avoid the area as well.
Spem in alium
I'm so sorry, Spem in alium, that's devastating. Prayers!! Spem, please accept my condolences. This is the second incident involving a Malaysian airliner in a few months. It makes one wonder if that airline is being specifically targeted for something. Thank you both, so much. I have heard much criticism regarding the airline in the last few days, particularly that they flew over Ukraine at a somewhat risky altitude (32,000 feet, when the "safe zone" was 31,000 and above) in order to save money. Whether or not this is true, I do think they will be under a fair bit of scrutiny now. I would hope most airlines are revising routes to avoid the area as well. Last I heard, no commercial planes are flying over the area.
Catherine Therese
I was sorry to hear of your family's loss too, Spem. It is tragic to hear of any deaths, but to hear of a young couple and their baby losing their lives this way is particularly devastating. That photograph you have posted of them is absolutely beautiful. I didn't know Sr. Philomene personally, but my brother had very frequent dealings with Sister through his work, so it was of course quite a shock to him. Regarding the airline - I have to say I'd never choose to fly with them, myself, after this. Not simply because they've had the misfortune of two fatal incidents within the space of a few months, but rather because of what it seems has been found concerning this flight - that their reason for deviating from the flight plan was a cost-cutting measure. Deviating from a flight plan over a warzone for any reason other than an emergency is playing wanton roulette with the lives of others, and is not at all suggestive of an airline that puts passenger safety as a priority... I have no interest in flying with an airline that sees human life so cheaply. And any airline that does not have risk management governance in place that accounts for the dangers of inclement weather, warzones and other hazards, is commercially clueless, as well. I certainly hope that if they continue to operate, a great many things change in the running of their business.

I didn't know the couple personally, but it's hit me hard - particularly the death of their little baby. I discovered this morning that one of my friends was friends with another of the passengers killed. It's so hard knowing that those we love are experiencing such pain and grief. I will be keeping your brother in my prayers. Definitely agree with you about not flying with them. I'm horrified by these revelations. The incident with MH370 definitely damaged any reputation the airline had previously, at least from what I've seen. I read that the flight was a codeshare, so perhaps some people on board MH17 didn't even realise until the last moment they were travelling Malaysian Airlines. CatherineM
Most commercial air companies had already stopped flying over. The intercepted traffic between the pro-Russian rebels show that they thought they were firing at a military jet. No excuse, just shows their incompetence. The site is being ransacked. It's being guarded by the same rebels responsible for the shoot down. Nothing is being mapped or documented properly. It's being looted and trampled by reporters. The international investigators are being kept out. In the Netherlands they are collecting things from the homes of the dead for DNA identification. They want to be able to bring their people home. Honestly, if I was the president of Holland, I'd ask the president of Ukraine if I could send some commandos in to secure the site.
Spem in alium
Today I found out one of my closest friends was scheduled to fly back from a trip to Europe on MH17 - he only didn't because his work wanted him to have a shorter trip. Scary stuff.
