dUSt
What is going on. Let's say a prayer. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

CatherineM
There are a lot of Ukrainians here. We've had constant coverage of the entire sequence of events. To take down a plane at cruising speeds from 33,000 feet requires a modern sophisticated high tech weapon. This wasn't a lucky shot with a home made rocket. I'm afraid this is going to take this conflict into a whole other level.
cmaD2006
Press reports here in the states say that a surface to air missle took it down, and whoever did it had to have sophisticated military training in order to do it. They also mentioned that one of those shoulder-launched rockets wouldn't have enough speed/power to get that high, so again it starts narrowing it down. This whole thing is kind of mind boggling and a bit scary.
ChristianGirlForever
According to the New York Times, the US has evidence that rebels downed the jet. It was horrible. In another article, they reported finding a dead baby amongst the rubble of the crash. What is wrong with people???
Luigi
One of the passengers who dies was Sr. Philomene Tiernan, rscj, of the Religous of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, founded in France in 1800 by Madeleine Sophie Barat. Quoth Huffington Post: "Sister Philomene Tiernan, a Catholic nun living in Sydney, Australia, is being mourned by her community after being confirmed as a victim of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, shot down over Ukrainian airspace on Thursday. A statement issued by the Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart mourned her loss, as she had been associated with their community for over 30 years. “We are devastated by the loss of such a wonderfully kind, wise and compassionate woman, who was greatly loved by us all. Phil contributed greatly to our community and she touched the lives of all of us in a very positive and meaningful way," said Principal Hilary Johnston-Croke. "Her entire existence was to bring good into this world," wrote Lucy Thackray, a former student of Tiernan's in a Daily Mail Tribute. "But she gave unwavering guidance and taught people that faith in God, in themselves, and in the world would carry you through the journey." The nun, a Sister of the Sacred Heart, was returning to Australia after a trip to Europe which had included a visit to St. Francis Xavier Church in Paris, where the founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, is buried. A student at Kincoppal-Rose Bay, a boarding school, said, "I feel like since we are all away from our parents she seemed like a grandma that everyone just loved." Quoth the motherhouse in Rome, via the American rscj web site: "MH17 Tragedy: Prayers for Philomene Tiernan RSCJ 19 July 2014 Dear Sisters and Friends, This morning we heard the very sad and shocking news that one of our RSCJ sisters Philomene (Phil) Tiernan was on the Malaysian Airline plane that was lost over the Ukraine yesterday. We wanted to share that news with you and to ask your prayer for her family, her province of Australia/New Zealand and her wide circle of friends and colleagues. Phil was Provincial of Australia/New Zealand from 1993 to 1999. She was at the 1994 General Chapter in Canada and had extensive contacts in the Society. Phil was on her way home, having travelled to Europe for a retreat in Joigny, the Janet Stuart workshop in England, and a family reunion in Holland. Many who encountered her at the Janet Stuart workshop commented how happy and peaceful Phil appeared, grateful for those experiences of the International Society. The shock and sadness for her Province is enormous, and we unite ourselves to them as we all seek to come to terms with this recent incident in our world. When in France, Phil had the great joy of visiting St. Francis Xavier Church in Paris where Sophie’s body is resting. Let us place her alongside Sophie as we commend her to God’s loving heart. Yours in his heart, Ellen Collesano rscj For the General Secretariat Edited July 19, 2014 by Luigi
Spem in alium
My diocese's administrator, Fr Vince Casey, issued the following message regarding the death of Sr Philomene. It is with the deepest sadness that I inform you of the death of Sr Philomene Tiernan rscj, former Chancellor of the Diocese of Broken Bay.Sr Philomene was among the 27 Australians, with 298 people in total, tragically lost on the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 overnight. She was returning home after a sabbatical in Europe. The Diocese of Broken Bay was enriched during her time as Chancellor and more recently through her work with Ecclesial Women. Her quiet manner and strength of character were greatly valued and loved. I ask that you keep Philomene’s family, the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart, and all her friends in your prayers. Spem in alium
These are my cousin's relatives who were killed. They had been married in 2010 and their daughter was not yet two, and they were in the Netherlands (the husband's home country) to introduce her to her paternal grandparents for the first time. Praying for all who passed, for all who are grieving, and for those who committed this devastating act.
CatherineM
The Canadian on board has a sister who lives here in Edmonton. He had just finished his second year of medical school. His life's desire was to cure things. Why is it when these things happen it always seems to be people so full of life. It never seems to be international fraudsters or pedophiles. I suppose there are, but since no one mourns for them, we don't hear about them. I hope it was quick.

Luigi
I heard from a friend this morning that there were a large number of leading AIDS researchers on board, too. They were all on their way to a conference in Australia, I think? My friend said this would slow down AIDS research in the immediate future.
