cmaD2006
Phrequent Phliers is cool ... you reminded me of joke. Those that go often for retreats/spiritual directors can be either one of two things: Frequent Flyers or Repeat Offenders :P

beatitude
On one forum where I am an admin, we had a teenager who had been sexually abused and who used the forum for support. Her abuser actually managed to find the forum and set up a fake account, posing as a concerned and helpful person. Luckily I realised it was him due to a few incriminating details that were minor enough for him to overlook. These type of things happen. It is scary to think that they could happen on a forum with such a close-knit atmosphere, but they do. However, I doubt that removing the PM function would fix it - people like this are able to be frighteningly manipulative in order to gain trust, and they would probably just find another way to reach their victims. Is there any way to add a disclaimer to a PM box that says something like, "If someone sends you an inappropriate message, e.g. about sexual matters, then report it immediately"? I think the best way to deal with such things - apart from reporting them to the police, which is essential - is to make sure that younger posters are very aware of Internet safety and how to look after themselves.
