Why Do You Think Pope Benedict Resigned?

it was presented as a mystery when he resigned. he didn't seem "that" infirm health wise. and a lot of commentators didn't really know.

there are reputable stories on the internet about him having a mystical expeience indicating to resign. it would be too strange that a mystical experience would say 'you're too infirm, you should quit'. there would be more to it.

there are to be sure plenty of offiicial statements regarding mostly health concerns.

He resigned to prepare the way

For it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Isn't that what pope's are for?

i would go so far as to say benedict had more of the theology thing going for him. no surprise, he was the leader of the congregation for the doctrine of faith before being pope.

i'd personally say francis has the economic thing going for him, and a lot of social stuff, and has some politically popular points to him, which is at the very least good for ecumenicalism.

im sure there's plenty of conservative catholics who disagree. but if you look closely enough, he never strays that much from orthodox catholic teachings on this stuff. it's usually just the way he spins things

The election of Pope Francis had absolutely nothing to do with Pope Benedict XVI

Welllllll......... Maybe in a universe where cause and effect is not a thing, or where time works non-linearly.

Get with the program, Nihil. We already passed the speed of light one week from now.

More seriously, I'll just take Benedict at his word: after some discernment he decided that he could no longer adequately fulfill the duties of the Petrine office.

i might wonder if it's because he considered himself first and foremost a theologian. and he didn't necessarily want to influence the church in a formal capacity.

i wonder if his current work is actively published.

i wonder if it was a matter of pride too, cause he often pushed some controversial stuff. and he didn't want it to go to his head? not that i can read his heart, just an idea.

I don't know, he never come and told me :jester:
