Anastasia13
Since some of you may have done more research on this already, please let me know if you have any cool links/resources to share. Please also indicate if it is Eastern Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or another branch (Oriental or Assyrian) if it is not obvious. Thanks! beatitude
I would like to promote a community I'm very fond of. This is the monastery where I attend Sunday Mass when I'm in Palestine, Emmanuel Monastery. They are a small community of Eastern Catholic (Melkite) nuns, Benedictine in spirituality. I thought that was an interesting mix, as Benedict is generally regarded as the father of Western monasticism. They celebrate their liturgy in Arabic and the local people come into the monastery choir for it (they're a very close-knit part of the neighbourhood) but their language for speaking among themselves is French - most of the sisters came from France to make the foundation. This congregation has foundations in Brazil and a few other countries too. They are small in number, but they're getting a steady stream of vocations and almost all the women who enter seem to persevere, thanks be to God. A novice recently made her profession, and almost as soon as she changed her white veil for black, leaving the novitiate empty, a new postulant arrived to take her place. :) Edited to add: I also love this Eastern Catholic Carmel in France. Gabriela
How do you, um, make it search? [URL=http://s813.photobucket.com/user/jesigler/media/Screenshot2014-07-10at065845AM_zps66739eaa.png.html][/URL] 1. Click one of the flags on the right to select a region. (Default is the US.) 2. Enter a city or postal code in the search box [purple arrow]. You can't search the whole country. There are WAY too many results for that. You'd break the internet if you tried. ;-) 3. In all those colored shapes under the search box, select what type of Orthodox you're looking for, or leave them all. [red arrow] 4. Uncheck everything but monasteries under listing type [yellow arrow]. 5. Go back up to the search box and hit "Search". Now you can either hover over the little colored cross-bubbles on the map or scroll down into the text list for details.
krissylou
I think most people have heard about these ladies, but here's a newly established Byzantine Catholic community in Northeast Ohio. http://www.christthebridegroom.org/p/discerning.html

marigold
The Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England (Orthodox) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriarchal_Stavropegic_Monastery_of_St._John_the_Baptist I love this monastery and often went there with a small group of friends for a Christmas pilgrimage. (Haven't been since I've been out of the monastery, but that's my own fault...) It's set across a country road, with buildings on either side. They have an underground crypt which you may be able to visit and pray in. The main church and two big refectories have frescoed icons all over the walls. The food is yummy and plentiful, and you can help set and clear the tables if you ask nicely :) The first time I went, we arrived just in time for the evening service, which was two hours of the Jesus Prayer in the pitch-black church with only a little red candle flickering on the altar. It was a shock to the senses, to say the least. Afterwards I was relieved to find out that the community is cheerful and friendly, about 30 nuns and 10 monks, a lot of them quite young, and from all over the world. It's amazing to think that St. Silouan and Fr. Sophrony have reached so many people everywhere. Just writing about it, I can smell the lovely bready scent of the refectory and hear the birds twittering. I want to go!

marigold
Two hours solid of the Jesus Prayer sounds like pure heaven. I want to go too! I want to go too..... Can you imagine doing that morning and night, every single day? I love it when I'm there but I couldn't do it - I need the structure and teaching of the hours. What a difficult and heavenly way to live. And maybe I'll take you both someday... :cloud9:
