Thank you :) I'll never forget when I was in Switzerland, a bunch of pholks from my English-speaking parish got together to celebrate Thanksgiving. We had ex pats, Jamaicans, Scottish, English, Irish...we all just wanted a reason to throw a party. It was the most amazing & unusual American holiday I ever celebrated... :)

My American ex-pat family in Australia always celebrate Thanksgiving every year - but they have to do it on the weekend following since it isn't a public holiday on the Thursday here. It's hard to be an ex-pat  -- easy to miss all the holidays, food, slang and most important, the accent! :)

It is a day to cook hot dogs, blow crap up, and celebrate the freedom of taking a continent from its original inhabitants by deadly force.

You're a traitor to your country with your reason and your logic. Don't you know that there weren't any Native Americans? That is a commie lie... just like the lie that there were Palestinians already in the land that the Zionists committed ethnic cleansing against. God created this land for white, Protestant settlers, because God is an American.

You two should take it to the lame board

That beautiful moment when traditionalists and communists find unity.

This isn't correct. You do not have the freedom to yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. Freedom is a license to do what you ought; it's not a license to do whatever you want. Take that, Benedict Arnold!

Happy 4th of July. ;)

"I've always felt there's something inherently psychopathic about joining the army in peace time, as far as I'm concerned people join the army to find out what its like to kill someone. I hardly think that's an inclination that should be encouraged in modern society, do you?" Father James Lavelle, Calvary (2014).

My daughter (born in Australia), joined the US Army because she wanted to become a nurse and at the time I was unemployed and we had no money for her to go to college. She knew the army would help her to achieve her goals to serve others in a medical capacity of some kind.

When she first joined though, they didn't have any medic openings, so they trained her as an army cook. It wasn't the position she wanted, but she did her duty, serving others in this capacity, and even did a tour of duty in Kuwait before returning to the States. At the end of three years, she re-upped because she found she loved the army so much (she worked so hard she became a Sergeant). In time, they did get around to training her as a paramedic and she was delighted. She was scheduled to go to Afghanistan as a medic, but at the last minute, her unit was stationed Stateside instead, much to my relief. But she was fully prepared to go there in service to her adopted country, to aid her fellow soldiers if they became injured.

Her motivation was never to kill anyone, although she accepted the possibility that she might have found herself in a situation where this was possible.I think to ascribe wanting 'to find out what it's like to kill someone' as a motivation to everyone who joins in peace time is a gross injustice and highly insulting to those who simply want to serve or to be trained in a field where they can serve others, and their country.

I thought it was clear that I was joking. I was quoting from Brendan Gleeson's character as the village priest in Calvary (2014). Maybe nobody has heard of that great Irish film. I am a sucker for any movie with a priest as the lead.  :pope2:

Well, I love any films with priests or nuns so I will look for it, but honestly I thought you were seriously quoting from some centuries ago priest with some kind of clout! :)

And I guess I just had to leap in because I am so proud of my daughter. I personally could never choose the army as a career, but she seems to love it and, well, I think she's amazing.

But thanks for the explanation - it makes a lot more sense now.
