Perigrina
There is often a physical component that can be treated with good sleep habits, healthy diet and daily walks in a natural setting.

Maggyie
I ditto Perigrina. FRESH AIR and more FRESH AIR. Go for a walk in a new neighborhood so that your brain has a lot to process with new sights/sounds/kinesthetic experiences. It's not you. It's your brain. Remind your brain of its urgent role in processing your surroundings.

1054
A gem from Russia: Prayer to the Mother of God in a Time of Distress By Father Arseny, an Orthodox priest held prisoner in a Soviet GulagAnother prisoner overheard Fr. Arseny praying this prayer before an icon of the Theotokos. O my beloved Queen, my hope, O Mother of God, protector of orphans and protector of those who are hurt, the savior of those who perish and the consolation of all those who are in distress, thou seest my misery, thou seest my sorrow and my loneliness. Help me—I am powerless; give me strength. Thou knowest what I suffer, thou knowest my grief: Lend me thy hand, for who else can be my hope but thee, my protector and my intercessor before God? I have sinned before thee and before all people. Be my Mother, my consoler, my helper. Protect me and save me, chase grief away from me, chase my lowness of heart and my despondency. Help me, O Mother of my God! http://www.saintgregoryoutreach.org/2010/01/prayer-mother-god-depression-distress.html
Credo in Deum
How do you keep from falling into it? Its like a black hole sucking me in... God is the source of our strength and happiness. Temptations to despair are temptations of pride. When I get them I try to pray to God for His love and His light. Other times I tell Him I'm upset and that I resent that I can't have things my way. Then I ask Him for the help to give these feelings of resentment and pride to Him and enter His Sacred Heart and be still. Immaculate heart of Mary, pray that I may love Christ with my entire being. CountrySteve21
I do not know your conscience, plus I'm not a spiritual master, so my opinion isn't the best, but I found when I started praying more, eating healthy, and working more, and trying to focus more on making others happy, my despair stoped, Deo Gratias! But prayer is number one, our hearts are restless till they rest in God; till God is our all in all. And drinking isn't the best for depression, as G.K Chesterton put it "don't eat and drink to be happy, but eat and drink because you are happy" Pax! And I will pray for you, if you don't mind a worthless sinners prayers :)

Probably isn't the best place to quote this one, but I've always loved, "Drinking to forget isn't as bad as forgetting to drink." Sorry to derail... As you were. The Bus Station
No two souls are alike, but all the general advice in this thread is good. Prayer. Eating healthy. Exercising/getting outside. Spending quality time with others. Prayer. These are all cliche solutions, but they're real solutions. Also, a drink or two or can't hurt. arfink
I'm really bad about getting outside, but when I do, I usually feel good. I also find that making things help. Making things for myself, that I'll never show anyone, that are just between me and God. Or making things for my family, even making dinner. As an act of love for them, even when I feel like crap. It helps, and I don't know why. But it does.
