Eliakim
Dear all: Previously I made argument somewhere here where I surmised the Pope would be struck dead before being allowed to issue forth an ex-cathedra errant doctrinal statement. I no longer believe this. I wish to make clear my change so as not to mislead anyone, and I encourage everyone to think for themselves on this. I no longer hold this to be a safe statement; on the contrary I believe it might very well be possible for a Pope to fall into error in such a manner where it may be nearly impossible to decide if his ex-cathedra statement was valid or not, or even truly ex-cathedra to begin with. I believe indefectibility is to be taken more invisible and local than visible and hierarchical. For this reason, to be safe, the possibility of error at the highest levels must be allowed. I desire to warn Christians about the potential great iniquity that could ensue from a view which, in effect, is tantamount to blind faith in the papacy. Augustine came to a similar head: "In a passage in this book, I said about the Apostle Peter: ‘On him as on a rock the Church was built’...But I know that very frequently at a later time, I so explained what the Lord said: ‘Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,’ that it be understood as built upon Him whom Peter confessed saying: ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God,’ and so Peter, called after this rock, represented the person of the Church which is built upon this rock, and has received ‘the keys of the kingdom of heaven.’ For, ‘Thou art Peter’ and not ‘Thou art the rock’ was said to him. But ‘the rock was Christ,’ in confessing whom, as also the whole Church confesses, Simon was called Peter. But let the reader decide which of these two opinions is the more probable." Source:The Fathers of the Church (Washington D.C., Catholic University, 1968), Saint Augustine, The Retractations Chapter 20.1. Also: In “The Reshaping of Catholicism†(Harper & Row, 1988), he [Avery Dulles] wrote that the Vatican Council had acknowledged the possibility that the church could fall into serious error and might require reform, that the laity had a right to an active role and that the church needed to respect regional and local differences. But he also emphasized that “a measure of conservatism is inseparable from authentic Christianity.†–NYTimes obituary I also believe only our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is worthy of the titles Mediator, Advocate and Redeemer. This will likely be it for me here except to PM. God grant wisdom. May He especially guide all sincere believers to Truth and right relationship with Him into whichever ekklesia expression pleases Him. Godspeed, Eliakim Proverbs 25:2 John 14:26-27 Mark 10:
Nihil Obstat
I also believe only our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is worthy of the titles Mediator, Advocate and Redeemer. Do we take this to mean that you formally reject the Marian titles of Mediatrix, Advocatrix, and Redemptrix?
Credo in Deum
I desire to warn Christians about the potential great iniquity that could ensue from a view which, in effect, is tantamount to blind faith in the papacy. You think Catholics have blind faith in the Papacy? I say Catholics have a clear faith in the promises and words of Christ! We believe in Him and His Mystical Body; The Church. "He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me"--Luke 10:16 "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."--Matthew 16:18 "But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother. And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican"--Matthew 18:15-17 Notice how Christ first gives us a Pope before He tells us what to do in the event that there is a dispute amongst us regarding matters pertaining to faith and morals. Now, where in the Bible are the verses which call Christians to be their own Magisterium and Pope? Where are the verses that tell us to question the Church and follow our own understanding? God bless.http://www.catholic-pages.com/pope/hahn.asphttp://answeringprotestants.com/tag/petra/
chrysostom
Where are the verses that tell us to question the Church and follow our own understanding? Indeed I remember one about leaning not on our own understanding. ;) Edited June 28, 2014 by chrysostom
