Lil Red
The best mod ever is no longer a mod. awww, you're so sweet to think of me. :P
mortify ii
Yes for laissez faire moderation!! This is a *discussion* forum and unfortunately there are folks who would rather suppress someone else's comments than engage in a discussion. I think that's lame! Agree to disagree, and have a sense of humor! This is only a forum, I think some folks take this stuff way too seriously. If you disagree make me a mod and I'll wield the Catholic hammer of conformity like you've never seen before!
fides' Jack
I think the moderation situation is excellent right now. Perhaps the best it has ever been, though many of our past mods are great people. And also Jason. I mentioned a day or two ago that I am seeing much more heterodoxy and error lately, but I think that is primarily for the orthodox membership to handle, not moderation. I do worry about the tags though. While I'm not sure I deserve to be special (Church Militant), I do think it's important for those are obviously at odds with Church teaching to be recognized as such. I think it's dangerous for anyone who might be influenced by them - there should be clear indication that the Church might not agree with said person. I don't want to push a "phishy" tag on anyone - but I've been somewhat confused by the tags lately, and I'm not sure they adequately clarify the above case. Benedictus
We should do another CM nomination thread so I can nominate Perigrina! You need someone who isn't in the thick of the debates :hehe2:
Benedictus
Honestly though, aside from one or two threads where people are engaged I don't see much happening. I definately don't see much worthy of moderation, although a few posts have been a bit direct. Plus it seems some have been misunderstood and some reading into what's been said (or it's not been said in the best way). The other issue is that text comes off a certain way, not always as intended. I think any personal issues can be tackled by PM in the first instance, especially if intentions are misread and it's unclear.. Can't say I've seen much heterodoxy. Maybe the issue of the Assumption? But it is a forum - maybe other stuff past me by. Edited June 27, 2014 by Benedictus
Perigrina
Dust prefers a mostly hands off approach, which is why, other than language, the thread over in DT keeps on rolling that was brought up earlier; not going to say anything too identifying about who reported what (other than my own), but of the last 10 reports, 8 concern the thread. Of those 8 reports, 6 have been made by 2 users. 1 Report was made by me, because I nipped some language I saw while I was on, before it got reported too, and Dust prefers that we keep a thorough trail with a Report, an Edit, and a Warn before we touch a post. The other was made by a 4th user who pointed out something that crossed the Winchester Line. If anyone wants to e-mail him to suggest more mods, I don't think the three of us would protest it; we've just mainly been trying to keep to the largely hands off approach. This reminds me of a question I have. Most places I've been, the moderators appreciate getting reports and it makes their job easier. Is that the case here? BG45
This reminds me of a question I have. Most places I've been, the moderators appreciate getting reports and it makes their job easier. Is that the case here? Oh it definitely does. We can't read the whole Phorum...well a person can try, but it's not just feasible. When more than one report shows up on a thread, for instance, one of us will usually watch it extra closely instead of buzzing through.
cmaD2006
What BG45 said ... I have pretty much stayed out of most of the board, except Vocation Station (and a couple of Lame Board threads). I will only go to places other than Vocation Station when we get reports and well, when the rest of the mods are mia. I honestly am still hurt by what happened the last time when a number of the ex-mods decided to "go after me" in a personal way, ... so if there is a complaint about not modding enough it really is due (on my part) to that thread. Life is too short, and I have enough on my plate to get "bashed" by people who don't know me in real life. So -- my choice has been to pretty much mod outside of VS only when I have to. Those of us who are mods are volunteers ... we do this because we accepted it. So -- when you think about attacking a mod (or criticizing, etc), just remember, we don't do this for a living, but we actually do this because we want to and we are human (with feelings, and who make mistakes). Perigrina
I have been involved in online discussion groups that are unmoderated and I have seen how ugly things can get.without moderators. It has given me a great appreciation for what they do. I feel very strongly about treating moderators with respect and fully cooperating with them. Benedictus
I'm confused what happens once reports go in. It's hard to tell if a report has fallen into an abyss, been rejected, is awaiting review or something else. I can understand that mods don't necessarily want to message people to say that a report has been rejected or enter into having debates about it, especially as some people probably would hang on every word said and run wild forming their own ideas about that person. It becomes negative. Forum life isn't easy, esp for mods.
