Ash Wednesday
http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/fashionbeauty/cry-for-help-sewn-into-primark-dress-11363914249093 Someone buying a bargain dress at Primark found a label sewn in the garment that says "forced to work exhausting hours" (cheap clothing store based in Ireland, found throughout Europe, a bit like K-mart.) Activism or cry for help? Certainly thought provoking all the same. Reminds me of the letter a woman in Oregon found in her Halloween decorations that was a cry for help from a labor camp in China -- it turned out to be true. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/11/06/world/asia/china-labor-camp-halloween-sos/

Benedictus
Primark was linked to contracts in Bangladesh where the conditions were very poor. The building hosting the works was so bad it partially fell down. That's how it made the news. So this doesn't surprise me, but it's shocking. People still pile into their stores though. maximillion
Have not shopped in Primark since the last scandal and also avoid other known slave labour and cheap label retailers for the same reason. Monocorps can not be trusted. I shop in thrift stores or from a retailer I can be as sure as I can be does not outsource to sweatshops here or abroad. I just had a row with my foster son about wearing Nike stuff and inked in all the logos so he is not promoting them either. Praying for all of those in sweatshops, badly paid or in forced labour......
CatherineM
Nikes are my issue. I have narrow feet, high arches, and recurring plantar fasciitis. The only shoes I can wear are Nike Air without experiencing stabbing pain in my heel. I wish I could find another brand that's less nasty or some kind of insole, but have tried everything without success.
blazeingstar
That's why I make my own clothes. You gotta watch even that though, the fabric factories are pretty bad in themselves.

blazeingstar
Gotta love that cheap labor woot woot! Go Capitalism; where no one cares about the people just the $$$$. Strawman. Most of these sweatshops don't occur in capitalist countries but socialist and oligarchy controlled areas The sweatshops tend to move out of areas once basic capitalism is established. NPR did a huge article on the cost of a teeshirt and how companies move on from one place to the next once wages get too high. So capitalism abusing socialism is more like it... None of these systems care about the people. That's why God founded a Church.
CatherineM
You gotta watch even that though, the fabric factories are pretty bad in themselves. My fabric comes from some pretty strange places, none of which is a factory.
maximillion
Can anyone other than me weave? Or spin? I do both, and I know where the flax is grown and the sheep are raised. Most folk don't have the time to go to those extremes though. Though I don't weave my own fabrics I know weavers who do and purchase from them, then I enjoy dyeing and printing it. I also knit, crochet and sew. The Domestic Arts, never inappropriate and never beyond use.
