While I like the movie, it always annoys me when they use the Lavabo as the place to remember when Pilate washed his hands of his crime.

I take it to be parallel but opposite actions. Pilate washing his hands to rid himself of the people's guilt and deliver Christ to his execution, while the priest does it to also symbolize the washing away of uncleanliness. Also, in a sense it puts us in Pilate's shoes, we are unworthy of Christ and what he did and does for us.

That was amazing!

17:44 really hits the climax of the Mass.

I think what's important to remember is that Calvary becomes present during Mass, and this is why I don't understand some charismatic groups who turn this into some festive occasion. If they were present there with John and Mary before the crucified Jesus they would not be clapping and playing the guitar.

I think it's a misunderstanding rather than intentionally being disrespectful.

Pilate was washing himself of his guilt not theirs. He did ths to pacify his conscience since Pilate was intellegent enough to proclaim Christ's innocence and yet he still condemned Him to a criminals death. That's beyond horrible to be a judge and proclaim someones innocene and yet still proceed with a sentence of execution out of motives of human respect- only to wash your hands of the matter as if it excuses you of the murder you just committed.

What a horrible place to put such a scene, when at the Lavabo the priest proclaims his guilt and acknowledges his sins and petitions God to be cleansed of them.

One of my pet peeves when these meditations come up.

Anyway if you two want to read an excellent book on the Passion then I would recommend reading; The History of the Passion by Fr. James Groenings SJ. Edited by Credo in Deum
