All this time I have used my ring, middle and index fingers for the sign of the Cross but I was searching around for Catholic prayers.. and seen that the Thumb, index, and middle finger is to be used.... all these 12 years of being Catholic and I didnt realise this :o

Interesting Tony, I don't know what fingers to use, so I just use any. I can't confirm this, but I was told by one particularly ignorant Coptic Orthodox family member the thumb, index and middle finger is supposed to represent the Trinity.

I have used those fingers. Nobody told me to it just seemed more natural. For once I was right! Hehe.

Point at someone. The finger you're using to point with is your index finger, unless you point in some wierd way. To be really specific, it's the finger between your thumb and middle finger.

What is the reason behind kissing the thumb? I've seen some people kiss their thumbs after crossing themselves.

I was listening on Catholic Answers Lice to an episode about the Sign of the Cross and I think they said that there's no official "right" way to do it, different rites do it differently...

In Latin America you cross yourself, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and then kiss your fingers as a sign of adoration. That's the way I do it.

A sign of love and veneration, I guess.

Ash Wednesday

Yeah, Byzantine and Orthodox cross themselves in the other direction. I knew about the three fingers thing when I was reading about them, actually.

I've noticed that when people cross themselves frantically in fear, like when they're scared, they use just the index finger.

I was just thinking to myself.. before the Rosary, I use the Rosary Crusifix to make the sign of the cross and then kiss the crusifix. That was something i had picked from people doing that on EWTN

I do forget to use the sign quite a bit... Ill start reminding mtself to use it more

yeah, when i pray the rosary i make the sign of the cross with the crucifix and kiss it, and also in the Glory Be's.

There's an awesome book by Bert Ghezzi i want to get my hands on, It's called "The Sign of the Cross; Recovering the Power of the Ancient Prayer"
